[Aikawa comes to. He's lying on ground that feels like compressed dirt and leaves, dressed in clothing that might be a little strange to him. Dawn appears to be on its way, though the air is heavy with the feeling of an oncoming rain. Barring the light of a halved moon overhead, it's a thin darkness that feels like it could be broken at any moment.
There's a knapsack next to where he'd been lying, which looks to be a little clearing tucked away in a thicket of bushes and bramble. In almost all directions, a dark forest sprawls outward, seemingly endless. It's silent and still, save for the chirp of insects and the occasional croak of a frog.
The only thing visible in the area he's sitting is a large, wooden building set with its back toward another slope of trees, which appear to lead in the direction of a mountain that looms just barely visible in the distance. It doesn't seem like anyone is around. From where he is, he likely won't be able to pick out many details.
the first thing he does is just lie there for a while. Staring up at the sky and the forest leaves above him and wondering to himself 'what the fuck'. Not this shit again. Except the 'not this shit again' isn't about it being a CYOA, it's about him waking up in weird places.
Anyway he'll slowly sit up and rub his head a little, just a tiny bit annoyed -- removing his mask briefly just to shake out and check that there's no dirt lodged up in it, only to realise... it is not his mask. What the fuck is this?
... ]
What the fuck?
[ WHAT THE FUCK. Well he'll just kind of grab at the knapsack then, what is in this? ]
Anyway, knapsack! His knapsack is kind of heavy. Once he's opened it up, he'll find a piece of paper inside, a bag of silver coins, some folded paperwork, and a key. The paper is small, and the writing on it is easily visible. It says, in a shaky and blotchy hand:]
Captain,
The body lies east of the watcher's nest, toward the far side of the field. You may want to wait until rainfall, or it will sniff you out.
I will be waiting for you in Tama. Please bring our Commander home.
As Aikawa is reading and the moonlight shifts through clouds overhead, his eye might catch something glinting from the foliage nearby.]
Well, why not. He'll keep this. Do his current clothes have pockets btw? He is looking over this... huh. Well, he doesn't know which way is east, but maybe... maybe something will tell him eventually...
Such as this piece of glinting whatever. Suppose he'll just... wear this new mask around his neck for now as he gets up off the ground proper, and will start heading towards this foliage. Peekaboo??? What are you. ]
[He does have pockets, good work Aikawa's pockets. He can stash his fresh and nice money away in there if he wants.
There are two things in the foliage when he goes to rummage around, though! One is a shovel, propped up against the tree. It's Aikawa-sized for convenience so it's not like sweet Aikawa has to go digging around with a little toothpick.
There's also a sheathed sword on the ground, the size of an oodachi. Another bigass item, just for Aikawa! Wow. Almost like they're his belongings to begin with.]
[Sieghart comes to. He's lying on ground that feels rocky, wearing clothing that is likely unfamiliar to him. In the distance, he'll be able to hear the sound of water lapping against a shore. The half-moon overhead provides some amount of light, and if he looks, he'll find that he's not very far away from the bank of a sprawling river. This river isn't in the middle of the wilderness, though; it cuts through the heart of a city, with its slopes carefully maintained by rock and leading all the way up to neat rows of buildings.
Of course, since it's still nightfall, there doesn't seem to be much activity. The footbridge stretching over the river nearby seems empty of any people, and not even a lone drunk is passed out on the banks. In the distance, there appear to be two small, flickering lights wavering through the air. But much closer is a bit of a strange structure. Some sort of tall, pike-like contraption, lined with what appear to be several roundish, melon-sized shapes. In the dark, it's a bit too difficult to make it out clearly.
As Sieghart moves, he'll also realize that he had been lying on a very small bundle.
[Coming to like this isn't unusual. Rather, what's alarming is the absence of familiar faces. The last time he stumbled into a scenario like this, he had three others with him.
Sitting up, Sieghart narrows his eyes as he takes in his surroundings. This sort of time period isn't beyond him, and he has a mild guess as to what the pike-like contraption is up ahead. However, his attention first drifts down, past the foreign attire, to the bundle on which he's been lying, for which he reaches.]
[The bundle is very light and made of a thin burlap-like material. If he opens the bag by untying the little strip of leather around it, he'll find a slip of paper inside, along with what appears to be a hand-drawn map.
Unfurling the paper will reveal the following note, written hastily in blotchy ink.]
Captain,
I have done as much as I can. The rest is up to you now. Here are the directions to Tama. I will leave the transporting of his head in your care.
Keep your eye west. Do not get caught. We will meet again soon.
[Head? Sieghart looks up at the moon, gauging his position. Westward, the paper says.
He lowers his head to peruse the hand-drawn map next, rising to his feet with the bundle in his other hand as he does. Don't tell him he has to steal a head and run? That'll be the death of him. Whom is he even supposed to meet?]
[The thing that Aikawa sees is a figure that's standing on a rock in the river getting slapped upside the head by a fish and bodied into the water as a child chases him down!
The thing that Sieghart sees is a boat heading their way with a little lantern on the end of it, just barely illuminating some bleeding dude and a weirdo in a smiling grandpa mask! There's a corpse there, too.
Congrats on the reunion, lads, what's up. The child's still busy with Sieghart, but the boatman's squinting up ahead at all of this. HELLO.]
[What a sight. Sieghart squints at the newcomers. The headless body is, horribly, what brings him the most calm since this adventure started, because he must be on the right track. Then a familiar voice booms from behind the bearded mask and Sieghart climbs onto his feet once again.
He sways and staggers back a step, splashing the water behind him, from the vertigo. His wrapped hand reaches out to touch the child's shoulder in order to steady himself.]
[THE BOATMAN IS SHOOED. The child reaches up to hold onto the hand that's on his shoulder, staring up at Aikawa with big ol' eyes, and then glancing over toward the corpse in the boat... And immediately he just tries to hide himself behind Sieghart which is probably not very good for sweet Sieghart's balance. Aikawa really did get to traumatize a kid after all.
While the child doesn't seem to have much to say at the moment, the boatman is just looking between these guys. There's the head they need! But why is this mans looking so raggedy, and also why is there a kid here!! With exhaustion in his soul and the realization that he too isn't getting paid enough for this, the boatman moves over toward the shut door of the house. He takes a key from his pocket, unlocking the door and pushing it open.]
Glad to see you made it, too. [IS SIEGHART NOT A CAPTAIN.] Er-- Captain's heading back to collect something, but please, make yourself...ves... at home. The others should be arriving soon.
[The medic tent is fairly empty for the time being! It's a pretty sparse set-up, but still better than just a few kits in a cabin in the woods. There are four cots, one of which is currently inhabited by a soldier who seems out cold. A table off to the side has several containers of medical equipment on it, along with jars and glasses of various sizes and shapes, holding everything from liquids to creams to powders. There's a small area with chairs for seating, but outside of that, there doesn't appear to be anything else in here.
Dio will attempt to help Sieghart over to a cot but if his punkass is going to be stubborn, he'll just basically shove him onto one. Binch. There are two guards nearby, and Dio shoos them off on some busywork errand to clear the place before heading over to the table.]
Give me the list from the start. No skipping on detail - this is going to be your last chance to get anything good before you hit Tama.
[Sieghart can and will be stubborn, because he is simply allergic to demons and will break out in hives any second now from dealing with Dio. More importantly, he doesn't trust him.]
What, can't you tell by looking?
[He waves his wrapped hand. Blood's soaked through the bandages after all the abuse it just endured.]
A snake bit me on the leg. My left arm's broken, and my right hand was smashed and slashed—the same goes for behind my shoulder. I'm certain some of my ribs are broken, too.
[He neglects to mention the minor scrapes sustained from crawling through a hole and trawling through a forest, because they're so minor that he can't feel them past the larger injuries. Also, the bullet graze wound is so obvious that he'll call Dio blind if he ends up having to point it out.
Sighing loudly, Sieghart fiddles with the loose collar of his uniform with his good hand.]
The sizing is all off. Don't you have this in a smaller size?
Do I look like I have eyes that can see through clothing?
[His reply is a little snappish, but there's some amount of stress there, too. Every so often, he casts little, darting glances over his shoulder or out toward the front gate.
When he moves back over, it's with some basic supplies in hand. Salve, fresh bandages, a proper sling.]
Hand out. [So he can start to treat it!! As for the question about his uniform:] What, why didn't you grab one in your own size?
[It's almost like some strange entity interfered to make Sieghart look like a clown...
Oh yeah, if he looks around the tent he'll also spot a wanted poster for Vaux Sucksman.]
[Oh, look, the demon is stressed—like none of them is!
He sees that wanted poster and is utterly unsurprised at the confirmation that they're looking for Aikawa. What rankles more is the fact that he has to collude with a fake wearing the face of a demon.
Sieghart holds his bandaged hand out with a displeased expression. Of course, he's still warm from the venom; however, he's already been given medication for its effects.]
[Lucretia leads the way into the door! It opens into a small room which serves as a small but relatively cozy office-space. A pile of paperwork rests on the single desk. A window lets in some natural lighting, with a sprawling, vine-y plant spilling its foliage from a pot that's sunning on the sill.
Aikawa might not have much time to look around though, because the moment the door closes behind them, Lucretia immediately fckin anime chops both of the soldiers in quick succession at the back of the neck, sending them sprawling unconscious to the floor. She then turns to face Aikawa, her brow drawn downward in concern.]
Well, that isn't good. [HELP.] Those two were supposed to be ours but most assuredly aren't, which means we might have some caught comrades on our hands. Or worse yet... an information leak.
[ He is reminded yet again that it is dawn and he is reminded that he is tired. He's not necessarily an outright day or night person but if he had to choose, he'd say he's a day person. He stares at that plant... what is it like? What is it like to just sit around photosynthesising...?
But then he just :pika:'s as Lucretia immediately chooses violence. ]
Isn't good? Yeah, I can tell! [ Please. Is there a closet or something they can perhaps stuff these two guys into? They can't very well just leave these unconscious bastards lying on the floor for anyone to discover.
The way Lucretia and Nikaido both have more information about this world than he ever will. It's driving him a little bit insane. ]
Edited (i had only two choices (day/night) and i wrote the wrong one) 2022-07-16 12:33 (UTC)
[The plant stares back with its soul-eyes, full of knowledge unknown to mankind.
Anyway there doesn't appear to be a closet in here! There is a desk which things could probably be stuffed under, and in fact, Lucretia is starting to drag one of them in that direction as she speaks.]
These two were on the raid that captured the commander, so I would bet sweet dollars- [THOSE DON'T EVEN EXIST HERE.] -that there are already people here looking for us. I need to find our highest point of contact; will you handle our papers? You may want to go give Nikaido some backup after that, just in case things get rough out there.
[ He'll pick up the other guy by the scruff and drag him over to the desk too, he guesses. This will be an awkward fit but... eh, it's not like he ever cared about anyone else's dignity. ]
I can try... but for the record, we're not exactly a bunch that really blend in.
[ Tfw you're in 1860-1880s Japan and your party consists of a darker-skinned older woman, a blonde-haired blue-eyed woman (although she IS ostensibly Japanese), a presumably fantasy white man, and a POW 9-year old. Aikawa, who would be the most reasonably 'Japanese', is still 6'8".

So I'm guessing we're really gonna have to get cracking.
[There's a headless body standing in the center of this enclosure now! Wowee. It's just standing there like a normal, living person would, save for the fact that it's missing its head. Actually, it appears to be looking for something? As if it still has its head, its neck turns to and fro like it's surveying the area.
Outside of that initial scream, though, it seems like anyone in eyesight has been shocked truly speechless out of terror. Immobilized, even! There's a strange stillness in the air, like it's holding everyone captive.]
Nah of course it's Risu's body. And as soon as Aikawa's within its range of "sight", it just raises a hand, pointing in Aikawa's direction before speaking.
