That's a blind as hell bear, there are no eyes to stab and maybe not even and eye sockets to stab considering that entire area is one mass of scar tissue. It is not, in fact, art style. He'll also find that this bear is apparently the terminator. The knife thrown toward its eye area makes its mark! A perfect hit! It sinks in a fair amount, and the bear throws its head back and shakes it to and fro, making horrible sounds. ...Except this bear can takemultipleheadshots, so. That barely slows it down, and it starts rampaging again. Aikawa can get within range to side stab it, but this bear has also survived being shot in the heart in addition to the head, so that sure ain't gonna kill it. The bear also takes a burly bearly swipe at him while he's within range, and then lunges forward like it might try to take a bite, too.
(sieghart voice) These animals are wrong.
While this happens, Sieghart tears off down the road, and he can probably hear several sounds from inside of the cart. The sounds of barrels jostling around, Lucretia delivering a very creative curse, Soujirou going "WAGH" and probably falling over something like Vladimir in that one train scene... The horses seem a little spooked to be suddenly zoomin', but they're not out of Sieghart's control.]

Fortunately I rolled a fifteen... will his luck hold after rolling two ones... anyway he manages to avoid getting swiped by huge-ass bear claws, making a spinny spin around the bear's back. Hopefully the sound will confuse it some along with the attempted stabbing??? He's glad he stocked up on those bayonets earlier so he won't be missing that one that he threw into the bear's head. ]

[Aikawa's free to take and hurl the barrel if he wants since there are no rocks back here, only some spare weapons, flag poles and barrels. As Nikaido's looking around to find something else to throw, Lucretia snatches the bomb and moves toward the back.]

[As she lights and throws the bomb! It is, tragically, just a simple smoke bomb - but it's a pretty potent one. The smoke that billows from it is thick and smells strongly, and the bear is caught up in the brunt of the initial blast, growling and roaring in CONFUSED BEAR FURY. It looks like they've bought themselves some more time.
However, because life simply cannot be easy for them, the wind shifts directions and blows a lot of the smoke right back at them. The horses are now struggling to see and also quite spooked, while means Sieghart will struggle to keep them under control and the cart is jostling pretty badly. Animals betray him yet again...
On top of that, there's also a crack! sound from the cart itself as they go over a particularly gnarly bump. One of the barrels has toppled over and breaks open, its contents - an intensely kerosene-smelling liquid - spilling across the cart's floor. These binches gonna fumigate themselves.]
Hm! Well, I guess I would arguably call kerosene a somewhat industrial liquid so he might be familiar that that is NO GOOD.
Can he at least reach in from here with his good arm and yank the rest of the barrel out? Just let it topple out of the cart and let it hit the bear or something, or let the bear get distracted with the rest of the kerosene. Man, that is nasty. ]
No more match lighting! [ Coughing. Ew, the smoke and the kerosene is such a bad mix of smells. ] And everyone get ready to bail off the cart ASAP if we manage to set it on fire!
[Sieghart coughs. Damned wind. He can't blame the horses for this one as he tries to calm their nerves by relaying simple commands, including slowing down a tad, when they ride over the aforementioned bump. His back burns and his broken ribs steal the air from his lungs, but he soldiers through the pain.
While he hears Aikawa, Sieghart focuses on controlling the horses to the best of his abilities with a splinted arm and a mangled hand. After riding into war so many times, his mind reminds him that this is nothing. He hunkers down to prevent himself from sliding off. If he's able to wrangle the horses through the smoke, he'll speed up; otherwise, it's an ongoing struggle to reclaim control by soothing them in his currently limited capacity.]
[Sieghart is really just trudging through a special kind of hell, huh... sweet, suffering Sieghart. He'll be able to get the horses somewhat under control, but it seems they'll have to maintain this pace for a while since the horses seem too spooked to go at a fully controlled dash just yet.
Back in the cart, Soujirou's immediately coughing up a storm about ALL OF THIS. Lucretia just nods and puts the matches away, glancing around at the liquid that's splashed across the floor, already soaking into the wood. GOD. She waves over toward Nikaido.]
Move the barrels to the side! [And then, to Aikawa:] Get ready to grab one of these and go, if we need to.
[Like. On the plus side, the bear's still a good distance away! The horses are still going over some bumps haphazardly, but Sieghart's managed to get them back under control partway, so no more barrels go flying. But if they stay in this covered area with the kerosene, they're going to start feeling dizzy and nauseous.
Also, remember that little question mark that was written off to the side of the left path? It would really be a shame if that indicated some potential but not fully known danger that they happened to run into right now in their time of need, huh...
A gunshot rings out from somewhere to their side, the bullet ripping through the side of the cart. Pew pew.]

I don't know what kind of cart this is but Aikawa's gonna reach over and try to get this place as aerated as they possibly can... whether that's due to having some kind of window or cloth curtain or whatever, it's being smacked or yanked open to get the smell and smoke out as the cart keeps dashing away from the smoke bomb at least.

He stiffens at the deafening sound of the gunshot, but there's little he can do about the attack when he's got his hands literally full with their steeds. He continues to drive at a pace the horses will tolerate, leaving the response to those in the cart.]
[It's like this, with cloth at the front and back and wood for the rest! But like, less for noblemen and more for Transporting Items. Most of the barrels are also normal sized except for Risu's, his is just Risu-sized and no one seems to comment on the fact that this is weird.
OUR GUNS THOUGH. As Aikawa is airing the cart out and making sure people don't start keeling over from the fumes, Nikaido is the one to first pick up a gun. She aims out toward the forest, keen eye watching the foliage for any tell-tale signs of glinting metal. Unfortunately, this is a high task considering the sun hasn't fully risen yet. Another couple of bullets go whizzing through the cart area, at different enough angles and a close enough time apart that they seem to come from different sources. One hits grazes Lucretia's arm. Nikaido fires a round off, but Chassepot guns are notorious for one thing! If you guessed "backfiring" that's super correct. The rifle backfires, which has them down one shooter for Shoulder Reasons (owie) but fortunately doesn't result in sparks falling on the floor (yet).
Sieghart is spared for now, but up ahead he'll be able to spot a distant, shimmering light...]
[ I believe in Nikaido's ability to be good with guns tbh, she's very multi-talented. Somewhere in his heart he is proud of her even though he isn't going to say shit out loud atm. Well, granted, that's ignoring the fact that she got hit by knockback but given that neither of them have ever used a gun, that's fair. But also this reminds him how guns actually maybe work and the fact that a certain collaboration of some irresponsible soldier and the rogue Vaux Sucksman accidentally almost committed ecoterrorism due to an unattended gun, he realises that's actually a bad idea. ]

The next time the mystery snipers fire a shot, they do hit the barrel too because i aki love chaos. i was going to roll for it but i decided to simply not, and let them explode a whole barrel of gas. It's a very dramatic explosion that singes some of their curtains and rocks the cart once more, but most of what catches fire is the foliage behind them. That'll probably slow their bear friend down even more! Good work, team.
Sieghart will see that it's... a banner and a lantern! It seems like they're entering the territory of the checkpoint they're meant to go through. Their somewhat cacophonous entrance has already gained the attention of some distant guards in a watchtower just off the path, it seems.]
[ That is exactly his plan at any rate. At the very least, it will hopefully make it hard to follow them. He's going to have to do some weird balancing shit to get this to work, but what else is he using that 20 dexterity for? Yeah that's what I thought. So he's gonna turn his back to the cart a minute, strikes the match, and he'll work fast -- light the match, grab the bomb, light the aforementioned bomb, and then drop both the bomb and match behind them.

Anyway, after that, he'll readjust his hold on the carriage... this is so chaotic. ]
[Well, the explosion they leave in their wake should suffice as a greeting. Gritting through the discomfort of being rocked again, Sieghart continues to steer the horses toward the checkpoint as he addresses the party behind him.]
We're closing in on the checkpoint!
[Unless someone tells him otherwise, he'll proceed as is. These are extremely well-trained horses, considering.]
[It's really a wholeass miracle that Sieghart hasn't keeled over yet.
Aikawa obscures their cart with a blast from a smoke bomb! A few other gunshots ring out, but fortunately, none of these hit the cart or anyone inside. Unless one of you really wants a bullet injury for some reason.
As Sieghart closes in on the banner and lantern and then passes them, he'll see a structure come into view up ahead. It looks like two guard towers with a bridge that runs between them, leading into a small enclosed space that already has a few soldiers wearing uniforms similar to theirs. The sun's peaking over the horizon by now, giving them substantially better visibility than before. There's enough space for a cart their size to fit between the guard towers with ease, though some soldiers are already on their way down to greet them before they even get that far.]
What was that noise back there?! We'll send scouts out stat if need be!
[From where she's tending to her wound, Lucretia hisses:] Everyone stay calm and act natural—!
[Nikaido takes a break in managing her own wound to rearrange the barrels so the body-holding ones are closer to Sieghart and harder to get at. Soujirou, in the meantime, just ducks down by one. Is he a stowaway or a prisoner, damn.]
[ Shoots Jae myself. Not Sieghart, just Jae. Anyway, Aikawa is SO exhausted. The sun rising just you know, makes you tired, as I know from experience, even if you had sufficient sleep beforehand. ]

A couple of the soldiers start leading the horses and cart into the enclosure, while one that looks of higher authority walks alongside, talking to Sieghart.]
We've been having trouble with enemy snipers in that area lately... Does anyone need medical treatment?
[Once they're inside the enclosed area, they'll be able to see what it contains more clearly. The enclosed space appears to be something of a courtyard for a building, which numerous guards patrol. There's a large exit on the opposite side, once again big enough for horses and carts to go through. There's a medical tent off to the left, as well as a dingy-looking enclosure which looks like some sort of jail.
The soldiers intend to lead the horses and cart over toward an inspection area to the right, where two other carts are currently being examined. The soldiers and travelers from those carts are just standing around, vibing and waiting for the checks to end so they can bounce.]

Aikawa obscures their cart with a blast from a smoke bomb! A few other gunshots ring out, but fortunately, none of these hit the cart or anyone inside. Unless one of you really wants a bullet injury for some reason.
As Sieghart closes in on the banner and lantern and then passes them, he'll see a structure come into view up ahead. It looks like two guard towers with a bridge that runs between them, leading into a small enclosed space that already has a few soldiers wearing uniforms similar to theirs. The sun's peaking over the horizon by now, giving them substantially better visibility than before. There's enough space for a cart their size to fit between the guard towers with ease, though some soldiers are already on their way down to greet them before they even get that far.]
What was that noise back there?! We'll send scouts out stat if need be!
[From where she's tending to her wound, Lucretia hisses:] Everyone stay calm and act natural—!
[Nikaido takes a break in managing her own wound to rearrange the barrels so the body-holding ones are closer to Sieghart and harder to get at. Soujirou, in the meantime, just ducks down by one. Is he a stowaway or a prisoner, damn.]

ANYWAY! The soldier, who has no reason to question this rambunctious lot just yet, simply nods and calls back into the space:]
Unit three! Check for the lost supplies and scout the perimeter for the enemy!
[Out go a bunch of guards, dispersing down the path YEEHAW. It's a good thing that happened, considering the Big Loud Arrival of this group has drawn more soldiers to the area than there would have otherwise been.
A couple of the soldiers start leading the horses and cart into the enclosure, while one that looks of higher authority walks alongside, talking to Sieghart.]
We've been having trouble with enemy snipers in that area lately... Does anyone need medical treatment?
[Once they're inside the enclosed area, they'll be able to see what it contains more clearly. The enclosed space appears to be something of a courtyard for a building, which numerous guards patrol. There's a large exit on the opposite side, once again big enough for horses and carts to go through. There's a medical tent off to the left, as well as a dingy-looking enclosure which looks like some sort of jail.
The soldiers intend to lead the horses and cart over toward an inspection area to the right, where two other carts are currently being examined. The soldiers and travelers from those carts are just standing around, vibing and waiting for the checks to end so they can bounce.]
