... that can be a complicated question. Personally, I was not really used in this period, so I don't have the same type of investment as the Shinsengumi swords there and Mutsunokami, who all were. Their owners were highly involved.
But the war that follows this is what lead to the fall of swords, and we were only really used as decoration after. It can be a rather somber moment overall.
Like...losing your purpose, then. Instead of being treasured and beloved and fighting in your master's hands, you're just kinda...there. To potentially be forgotten.

And as long as you have your sword your human body will remain, too, right? That's how it exists. With the spirit in a body you've got some autonomy so you're able to do whatever you want and have your own will instead of being bound to an object.

Then againâŚthereâs maybe someone less happy in your presence, given that heâs standing in the doorway of his own sleeping quarters. He catches your eyes, a stern frown on his face as he points to the ground near his feet. The message is clear. âYou. Here. Now.â
You excuse yourself, crossing the lawn to head toward the other boy. You try not to judge him for wearing a surgeonâs smock and flip flops, but you canât help it.
âSo where were you?â He asks immediately, and youâre dumbstruck. You have no idea what heâs talking about, and when you express your confusion he huffs. âIâve been stuck in the infirmary for, like, two days. You donât come by. You donât offer to help.â
And that confuses you further. Why the hell would anyone want that? Why would anyone want you around people theyâre trying to save? You barely even register that youâre voicing these same concerns until he continues ranting at you.
âYou canât help out a friend? Maybe cut bandages? Bring me a soda or a snack? Or just a simple âhowâs it going?â You donât think I could stand to see a friendly face?â
âWhatâŚmy face?â
You canât believe it. People never think of you as a friendly person, let alone people like him. He carries on, scolding you for your stupid idea of leaving and even when you tell him you plan on staying, his only response is to say youâre still dense even if youâre not a complete idiot. You think about the fact that there are patients he should be attending to, but here you are, having the stupidest conversation in the world.
âHow can you even talk to me like that?â You ask. âDonât you know that I can-â
âRight now, you couldnât do any of that without melting. I told you, no more of that. Doctorâs orders. You owe me at least three days of rest in the infirmary. Starting now.â
âŚyou catch his eyes again, and for a brief moment it feels like youâve been suckerpunched. Your stomach squirms, palms a little sweaty, mouth dry as your brain fires off thousands of thoughts that all seem to lead to the same place.
