...nothing happens. Odd. No reaction from the inactive machines.
When they pass through, they...still don't activate. Looks like they're free to cross all the way to the contraption at the end without injury, as long as they can dodge slow metal boulders -- which they most likely can even without a roll, really.
They don't look nearly as rusty as the one that grabbed Zuko, either...
[Guess? She's walking past these very slow boulders to make her way over to the contraption? Though she glances up whenever she can, keeping an eye on the machines.]
[He walks forward at the same time as her, glancing up now and then, trying to check if they're suddenly going to activate now that they're in the room proper.]
While they pass through, one of the machines' eye opens up, looks at them, and...the machine doesn't move at all, following them by sight, until they reach the end of the chamber. Stairs are placed into the wall, leading out.
Near it, there's the contraption. It turns out to be a tube, its diameter as big as a cantaloupe. Judging by the opening facing up and at them and the usual blue glow of something allowing action, they're mean to introduce something there. Ah, and how fortunate! Right to the side of the tube there's an indentation of the ground, where a sphere of the right size is at!
Or should be at.
The by now expected noise of the guardians coming to life echoes in the chamber, and when Bradley and Sheila turn their heads, they notice two things:
One is that among the boulders, rolling around leisurely, there's the sphere they would need to get into that tube, glowing with arcane lines.
The other is that the guardians are on the move -- one running in direction of the sphere, chasing it! And the other charges a laser, aiming at Sheila's chest, a dot signaling where it will hit. It seems one of the guardians will try to keep the sphere they need away from them, while the other attempts to murder them!
[He will create a pillar as close to the charging guardian as he can manage (14). It's not really a shield, but he figures if it's a projectile, that maybe it'll be slowed down a little?
A pillar of ice emerges from the floor, rising high! Just in time for the guardian to finish charging thanks to that [14]! The laser strikes the ice, and [6] it seems it worked well as protection, chunks of the ice breaking and striking Sheila. A minor annoyance, better than getting your chest blown away by a laser. The attacking guardian, unhappy its quick attack to get rid of one didn't work, decides a more hands-on approach, getting a sword out of its body and beginning to approach Sheila!
In the meantime, with Bradley, the stealing guardian, having been closer, reaches the sphere first, grabbing it and holding it high, making high-pitched noises at Bradley that are definitely meant to mock him. Catch it if you can, pretty much is shouting! And swings the sphere around, striking a passing boulder, making it roll in his direction thanks to the inertia!
Yeah, but— [She cuts herself off, thinking. Hm.] Wait. Hang on. If it works, I have an idea!
[Sheila will attempt to stop the machine coming at her with her rune, while also running away from the sword and incoming boulders. She rolled an 11? Help.]
The good news is that Sheila's Stasis rune works on the guardian! Several ethereal chains appear in the air, trapping the guardian, giving her enough time to run -- however, it seems the stasis doesn't last for long, just for a few seconds, the guardian resisting it. Still, a few seconds can make the difference in many situations. [10] It was enough time for Sheila to get away. The guardian moves away in time before one of the stray boulders going around could have even gotten close to it. Clutching its sword, it looks around, trying to locate Sheila. Those few seconds were indeed enough for her to lose that guardian for a moment.
Now the bad news.
Bradley's roll was pretty bad. The boulder pushed in his direction reaches him, throwing him to the ground, and it tries to roll over him. The one thing that saves his life is that it wasn't going very fast. If it had more speed, it would have rolled over him completely! But with its slowness all it got to do is roll up his legs and to his hips. Bradley will feel the painfulness of a leg bone breaking -- the tibia, let's say, and the boulder rolling away. It won't stop him from walking, but it's definitely a bad enough injury for him to be constantly in pain and walking very slowly. The thieving guardian puts some distance anyway, holding its prized sphere.
[I think it's very funny Bradley is taking so many hits when he simply does not have the con to deal with it as well as Sheila would.
Man, screw this noise! He's going to make his own pillar to stand on. How far away is the guardian. He's about to do some bullshit and jump for the thief's sphere (14).
Watching Bradley jump with his fucked up leggy, Sheila doesn't hesitate to use her rune to stop the klepto guardian.
Which might be a terrible idea? Because while she tries her best to weave through the boulders in an attempt to use them as cover, she sure just rolled an 8 for avoiding her guardian.]
Using the rune on the klepto guardian that stopped is a really good idea! And it works, it stops it right in its tracks for long enough fr Bradley to reach it and grab the sphere.
However...he's unable to take the sphere away. The stasis rune affected the sphere as well, making it immobile. The rune's effect runs out, and Bradley sees right to his face the guardian's eye, staring at each other before it starts shaking the sphere, trying to get him to lose his grip on the sphere, or at least drag him along if necessary. Not terribly effective, but it's trying [12]
As for Sheila! The 8 definitely wasn't enough to stay hidden! The guardian with the sword emits a victorious screech before running in her direction, [3] just to get smacked by a boulder and pushed aside. It's not dead, but still, geez, that wasn't a good job at all.
[He he sees!! Now he's just clinging onto the sphere. He's not getting go, and neither is the guardian. Now it's him using both hands to try and struggle the sphere (18) away from the robot.]
... Oh, I did not know it would do that. Sorry, Bradley!
[Oops!
Anyway, Sheila will freeze one of the boulders with her rune so it stands in a collision course with the other boulders... Except she rolled a 7, so it might not even be that many? But then she rolls an 18, and she will kick and use her lightning magic on the boulder to give it a little extra oomph, in an attempt to pinball it toward the guardian with the sword.]
It's such a strange event. Bradley manages to wrestle the sphere away from the guardian...and since the guardian rolled a [1], the arms detach and just...stay hanging from the sphere, Bradley able to take it away. The guardian is now sans two arms, trying to crawl after him, but there's only so much it can do in this state. Perhaps it's karma for breaking Bradley's leg with a boulder.
One thing Sheila will notice is that when she freezes a boulder in time, it stays frozen for far longer, the chains stopping it in its tracks. Only one boulder collides against it, not moving it at all -- then Sheila begins kicking and throwing lightning at it! That does make a difference!
When the stasis runs out, the boulder rolls away at a sudden speed, the guardian not even having time to move out of the way before the boulder crashes into it, obliterating the guardian immediately! Pieces fly around, and so does the sword it had been using, free to be taken if anyone wants it.
With one guardian destroyed and the other missing two of its limbs, and the sphere in Bradley's possession, it seems Bradley and Sheila pretty much have achieved victory. As long as they don't, like, lie down in the middle of a boulder's path they should be fine! Careful with Bradley's leg, though, that's a pretty bad injury.
I know! Not bad for a girl from the valley, huh? [A beat.] God, I hope we didn't just jinx it.
[It'll be fine?
She grabs the free sword and scuttles to help Bradley, supporting him so he doesn't keel over while they make their way across the room, back to the puzzle.]
Thankfully, there seem to be no further surprises waiting to ambush them. No flying skulls nor sudden goop coming to attack. Sheila and Bradley reach the tube safely, prying off the robot arms off the sphere.
Rolling the ball into the tube is easy enough. The ball rolls well, and goes out of sight into the wall. Far away, there's the sound of a click, and the noise of rotors coming to life somewhere below them, past the stairs. Success!
Upon descending the stairs -- very slowly, presumably, given that injury -- they will find themselves in a wide balcony, surrounded by a beautiful handrail. Sebastian and Zuko are already there. All rotors are already moving.
In the distance, beyond an empty chasm very far over a lake at nighttime, is a cylindrical chamber, extending from below Van Medoh's wing. The rail goes into an opening there -- your destination, and somewhere in that cylinder, there's a way to reach the outside of this odd flying mechanical beast. You're so close!

Slowly, watching the boulders roll:]
Oh, no.
[HELP. She glances up, squinting.]
Well. It looks like circle means fucking giant death boulders and robots. How good are you at dodging?

[The robots... He squints up at the robots.]
Those could suck.
