[There is no demonic presence yet, or much of any presence at all given the late hour. This is an academy after all, most people here have to get up for classes early tomorrow. So it's eerily quiet as the four of you wait at the train station for midnight to roll around.
A clock built into a pole nearby ticks down, and it chimes out 12 times at midnight. Right as the 12th chime rings out, a single tram car rolls to a stop at the station. Nothing seems off about it at first, it's just a normal tram like you have seen dozens of times before. But this one is completely empty, missing even the driver at front.
The doors open, and the tram waits for you to step inside.]
[ ...you know what. Bucky will pull out one of his guns just in case as he steps into the tram and peers around. Is there truly no one here? Is there really...nothing? ]
But as soon as they step onto the tram, the doors slide closed behind them and it starts moving along the track. Nothing seems off about it right now, though it does feel uncomfortably quiet. You know that feeling of being watched, even if you can't see what's watching you? You definitely have that.
But you might want to explore the tram car a bit to see what you can find. It's a standard tram car, with a passenger area and then a little driver cab at the front that you can access through a small door.]
Do not start with ghosts. I haven't asked Hua Cheng how to actually deal with--
[ slam! there go the doors. and there go the tram, them inside. ]
Great.
[ Bucky is going to beeline for the driver cab at the front, kicking open the door with his gun Out in case anything wants to mess with him as soon as he accesses the driver cab. ]
I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm sure we're being taken somewhere fun...
[ he says, while inspecting the rows of benches as he walks. he taps a few of them tentatively with the capped end of his scabbard. is there anything they can see outside the windows? or sticking to the ceiling? ]
Dunno if it's any safer to leave the two of you here by yourselves.
[ but sylvain does try to move a little closer to the driver cab. ]
[The passenger section seems to be free of anything that would suggest demonic activity. No strange moving shadows, no eyes peering out, everything appears solid while Sylvain taps the benches. Outside the windows everyone is able to see that this tram is taking one of the lines that leads further upwards on the massive sprawling town that makes up the area around True Cross Academy. It hasn't started going up the incline yet, but you can tell from the line it's following that you will eventually be going to the top of the massive hill the academy was built on.
In the driver's compartment, there is no driver obviously. But the controls and wheel seem to be moving of their own accord, with nobody actually touching them. It's driving as it should, but nobody is at the wheel basically. There is a dead man's switch too but it's currently active, like someone's holding it.]
[ calling out to the others: ] It's fine, I can take care of myself.
[ so like. Focus on keeping Estelle and Kazu safe for now.
Meanwhile, Bucky will wave his free hand through the space where he'd expect the driver to be--and particularly right over that engaged switch. Is it just an invisible driver or something? ]
[ he's reluctant to accept that, but they're the experts, so... no arguments here. ]
These things usually have drivers, though, so something should be running it. Or pulling it along, maybe?
[ the mods said we still have effects, so black cat ears forward and back, listening for any odd sounds. he's going to go check the door, to see if it's actually locked, green paint starting to seep out from under the uniform sleeves and covering his hands. drops remain on the door wherever he touches, but they disappear a few seconds later. ]
Something could be waiting for us on the track, too. Can you see if you can open a window?
[ he doesn't want to be trapped in the train car if he can help it. not again. ]
[Bucky can wave his hand through that space! Nothing is there, so no invisible driver. Still the controls keep running themselves. Bucky will be able to see out the front window too, and he'll see that the path is taking them on a gradual loop upwards towards the top of the Academy. Everything seems normal right now, aside from the fact that there's no driver and the train is driving itself.
The doors are indeed locked, but the windows can be slid open! The opening is small though. Estelle could fit out it, and maybe Kazu if he wiggles through, but there's no way Sylvain and Bucky could get out that window. This train does not have safety escape windows, so sad.
Sylvain can sit down though, and when he sits down he'll feel a slight humming feeling. It's like the bench is thrumming with electricity, but not exactly that since Sylvain isn't getting electrocuted.]
[ "there's no way Sylvain and Bucky could get out that window" don't fucking test me
Anyway, Bucky will return to the main tram area where the others are. He holsters his gun for now and slides open a window for Kazu. ]
We're headed up the hill to the top of the school. I couldn't find anything or anyone controlling it. [ He leans back across the shut doors, arms crossed. ] But there's nothing blocking the controls off, so we can hijack them if we want. Probably.
Sylvain will feel the jolt of the tram as it suddenly picks up speed. Being as familiar as he is with rough rides in carriages and such, it's easy for him to maintain his balance despite the sudden movement of the tram.
Estelle is also familiar with carriages and how rough rides can be in them, so she feels the sudden jolt as it happens and instinctively know how to keep herself upright.
Kazunari, similarly, will be able to keep himself upright. He'll feel the jolt but staying upright is easy for him.
Bucky is, fortunately, leaning against the doors right now. So while the sudden jolt does send him flying, he's right by a pole he can grab onto to keep himself mostly-upright. He was very close to falling on his ass though.
But the train is picking up speed now. And along with that, there's a sharp curve up ahead. That could be a problem.]
Whoa! [ he almost loses his hold on the chair, but still keeps his footing, and calls after bucky - ] Don't break them!
I think we have to brace ourselves no matter what. That turn's way too sharp!
Okay, okay, um... [ he pulls out one of the summoning papers for our little green friend, and rips it apart. ] Can you open the door for us? And hurry!

Looks dead empty in here.

[... It's a little disappointing, for her first train ride.
Bucky boards, and she peeks through the door behind him.]
Ghosts aren't always visible, right? What if they're right here in front of us...
[Despite that worry, she'll stick close to the others as she boards.]

Maybe we have to do something so we can see them? IDK what, though.

...Keep your eyes peeled.
[ (this definitely smells like an ambush, or maybe that's just the ptsd.)
and as much as he'd like to hold estelle's hand through this, sylvain makes sure he has enough space to draw his blade if needed. ]
If it's a demon, we'll be able to see 'em. If it's actually a ghost... Well... [ they're sol? ]

[ bye, bucky. well, at least they were thinking along the same lines, but... he glances at the other two. ]
School was about demons, I think...? More importantly, shouldn't someone go with him? It doesn't seem safe to go alone.

It only opens this far... I could probably fit through, but I don't know if that's a good idea.
[Do we really wanna climb out and surf on the rooftop? How fast is this thing going, anyway?]

[ what... what do we do. he leaves the door to stand closer to the others, one hand nervously drumming fingers on the back of an empty seat. ]
Would hijacking it do anything? It's not like you can make these things go off the tracks.

Something's weird about the chairs...
[ he also adds, re: hijacking, ] —And if you break it, we all just might end up stranded here.
[ anyway, he looks around to see if there are any maps indicating where they're going, or a list of stops anywhere... ]
[ to kazu, ] Can you send one of your demons to scout outside the tram?

DEX check:
Bucky: 11
Sylvain: 21 (nat 20)
Kazu: 17
Estelle: 20 (nat 20)
Sylvain will feel the jolt of the tram as it suddenly picks up speed. Being as familiar as he is with rough rides in carriages and such, it's easy for him to maintain his balance despite the sudden movement of the tram.

What the hell was that?
[ and then he realizes, looking out the window, that oh, they are going WAY too fast for this section of track. ]
We've gotta brake the train!
[ So Bucky is going to try to rush back into the driver cab and find wherever the brakes are and...yank on them? They're levers in trains, right??? ]
no subject
[Estelle yelps and grabs onto the back of a chair. But she's quick to steady herself, and she looks back to the scenery whizzing by in the window.]
If he can't stop it, we'll have to brace ourselves...
