[ When you open your eyes, itβs to the quiet sound of rock music, and to the sound of your car rattling along on the highway. you feel a little disoriented. maybe a little dizzy? but that's all.
there's nothing unfamiliar about this situation, besides maybe what must be a little motion sickness?, because for you, it's normal. hua cheng, you've been traveling with your younger sister harrowhark for years now. the two of you help people for a fee. it means a life that's on the road, but that's okay.
it's a life that's full of tragedy. a life that's full of drama.
but it's your life, and you wouldn't trade it for anything, right?
whatever happened before is forgotten. this is your life. you're in these old seats, and the music is playing, and you both know you're on your way to a destination that's not far away, now - an old mansion, where you'll be meeting up with a client that harrowhark found you, this week. based on a rumor, a legend, of things that go bump in the night.
it's a hunting trip. you save people. you hunt things.
that's the family business.
hasn't it always been? ]

well, harrow is definitely not capable of driving a car, even in this au, so she's on map duty. the music, definitely her favorite song, is playing, and the road ahead is clear. probably.]
hua cheng unfortunately is always depicted in modern AUs as being a car guy despite his depth perception, so this tracks. this is definitely the song that they both agree is great, though, so it's fine. ]
Maybe if the navigator gave better instruction. [ this is just normal sibling banter when you're both rude. but he will make sure that he doesn't miss the turn.
hopefully the presumably clear road stays clear. ]
anyway. glad they agreed on their music! good for them. this rock soundtrack is normal, and they are cruising.
according to harrow's map, they've got about two miles to go. she's got a journal on her lap, as well, an old, leatherbound thing that she knows is a precious family heirloom. well, for all the family that you have, anyway. it contains the details of your gig. maybe you should share them with your brother?
A mysterious mansion in the middle of nowhere supposedly contains a spirit that needs to be laid to rest, simply known as the "woman in white". the owner of the house says that he inherited it from a family member, but they've avoided going into the house since buying it. might be a ghost. might be a wraith. you guys are the experts, here.
hua cheng is vibing and driving. his car, his precious baby, drives so nicely. the road itself is calm, if a little eerie - it's dark, and a storm is brewing on the horizon. ]
Your standard inherited haunted house. A βwoman in white,β apparently. I didnβt get any details about the price damage sheβs been doing. Ghost or wraith would be my guess, but weβll see.
[ he doesn't really care that much. but it's the principle of the thing.
shotgun is probably in his blindspot, so he resists the urge to look over at her and the journal or map. ]
So, slim chance of bones to keep. [ salt and burn... waste of a good bone. ] Depends on how wrathful she's being about them living in her house, but probably enough that they're desperate enough to call people us in. We're in for a storm either way.
[ this mutual soccer mom arm does what it's supposed to do, and hua cheng slams the brakes! they shriek, loudly, as your car squeals to a stop just a millisecond from hitting the girl and sending her flying off of the road and over the little bridge.
the woman has both of her arms in front of her face. they're clawed up, blood dripping down them, and she's breathing like a wild animal, probably because, you know, you almost hit her with a car.
when she pulls them down, she staggers forward, though, her hands hitting the hood of the car, and her head lifts to look at them. the woman is young, her hair pink, and when she lifts her head, you both realize what's wrong.
her eyes are missing. they've been gouged out of her head, leaving blank, horrifying, hollow sockets - blood streaks down her cheeks like tears. she manages a desperate - ] H.. help... me -
[yikes. Well harrow does not recognize this pink haired girl, probably? But she will scramble out of the car. Does she keep a weapon in here by the way?]
[ ha, bad! once harrow is not at risk of flying out of her seatbelt or some shit, hua cheng puts the car in park and is also flinging himself out of his baby. ideally with a weapon on hand. ]
I've got this side. [ in case something decides to come out after this girl. he's going to move closer towards her with his back to the car, keeping his eye on things. ]
[ nope! well, maybe. there's sort of a familiar feeling in your stomach. you know this girl, from somewhere.
but it's hard to tell.
she sobs, once, curled up in a ball on the ground. she's bleeding out of her eyes, and from another wound on her stomach - badly, curling up around herself.
the two both, of course, have a massive stock of weapons in their trunk. why wouldn't they. however, on her way out of the car, harrow remembers she keeps a knife in the glove compartment. she also, for some reason, has a single stick of dynamite and a pistol.
hua cheng has a glock in a thigh holster because it's sexy. did i mention you guys changed outfits? you are, of course, in winchester chic. maybe you have matching leather jackets. i don't know thats up to you. ]
[ very sexy of them. the jackets and the weapons, that is.
hua cheng draws the gun from the thigh holster, bringing it up and standing watch over the two of them. he follows the sightline as he aims, finger on the trigger guard, slowly scanning the area before turning in the direction the girl came from. ]
How bad, Harrow? We need to get her out of here? [ can she even make it out of here. ]
[ she's just bleeding. she's bleeding a lot. you guys know that you are both trained in first aid, but you also know that in this series, girls besides harrow tend to not live very long. she grasps her hand onto harrow's sleeve as she comes close and says in a quiet, miserable voice - ]
H- Harrow... [ and clutches her sleeve. don't you know her? ] Let... let me die... don't let her use me...
[ as hua cheng looks around, following the sightline first and then looking where the girl came from, he'll see there's a thicket of woods! just past the bridge, the road continues and turns to the left, going around the large thicket of woods - that was their turn.
an owl hoots over head. the car still plays soft rock music. ]
Keep your ears open. Things look clear, but we don't know where the hell she came from.
[ he steps around the two of them to go open one of the back doors to the car, keeping glock on hand. do we have another lesbian flannel or a first aid kit back here, or is he going to have to open the trunk to get something to help staunch the bleeding?
he'll do it if he has to, quick as he can, so whatever he winds up getting he'll bring to harrow so they can prep this strange-not-strange? girl for moving. ]
[ you're the one who assigned this sweet girl whose name is (looks at hand) stella girlfriend! not me!
anyway, it's true. the reality of the situation is that harrowhark has lost many, many...many girls she's loved over the years. she's always been chasing the high of sexy gideon nav, though. sexy, sexy gideon nav.
the pink haired girl would be more recognizable if she was not missing both of her eye sockets. she hiccups, curling her fingers shakily around harrow's wrist. her voice is weak, and getting weaker, blood gushing from her injuries. ] The... the... her, the.. woman, the woman... the mansion...
[ not very helpful. then again she just had her eyeballs gored out by something so i think she's allowed.
hua cheng finds three lesbian flannels and a first aid kit! wow. in the trunk, if he does open it, he just sees so many fucking weapons. like, so many weapons. ]
[sheβll keep trying to staunch the blood as long as Stella is still alive. This is so sadβ¦they can use some flannels and try to move her to the car.]
Kit's in the back. [ just gonna. use their good flannels, and holster his gun so he can help scoop her up carefully and make this easier for all of them. ] Come on, hold on for just a little longer. Mansion will be long gone before you know it.
[ in she gets. this unrecognizable girl feels very very small in hua cheng's arms, as she's lifted up and carried away. he's reminded of the many women they've seen fridged in their lifetime, for some reason.
she whimpers, in pain - as harrow comes with her to hold her together, the pink haired girl reaches up. her hand misses, at first, but then, brushes against harrow's cheek. ]
I'd rather.. I want... be careful... You... you don't die....
[ she trails off, there. as hua cheng is lifting her, she and harrow will both realize it's too late. her hand falls limp, dropping to her side. 'stella' is cradled in a nest of flannels, but not even that could save her from her death. no plaid or plot armor protects anyone, here.
there's a faint "awww..." sound and a sniffle, from an untraceable source. ]
[who the fuck is βawwβing at this. the 500th cute girl sheβs had vague sexual tension with to die bleeding in her armsβ¦itβs not an aww moment!]
[ yeah you guys really suck at half of your job. maybe you'll be better at the other half? the hunting things half. who knows.
anyway. harrow's (wo)manpain aside - when she looks around, she doesn't see anything unusual. just the trees, the road, the wind blowing through their hair. no one there!
hua cheng is still holding a corpse of a dead girl. wow. ]
