[ I am like, 99% sure even his underwear would be mushroom themed. This man is nothing if not incredibly committed.
But here Emet-Selch goes, driven by the morbid curiosity to go ahead and watch this thing. It appears to be a self-produced video, telling the really cool tale of a very awesome sorcerer, whose storytelling you cannot help but feel is likely bolstered a little bit... or, you know, by a lot. It seems to be some kind of heroic tale video of a powerful sorcerer, who took down an organisation of evil wizards by turning it into a giant mushroom. It is about as perfectly mediocre as you were possibly led to believe. However, midway through the video, the VHS starts to glitch and change. Everything rewinds. The truth is told from the beginning.
The tall tale is adjusted and retold from the start. Suddenly, you are observing a dirty hallway, swathed in blood. Two massive bodies lay against the wall, injured and bloodied. What you can see of them distorts -- one, long purple hair unravelled into a mess, the other, the aura of the Sun darkened as if by a solar eclipse.
The video jumps and cuts, a garbled and glitched voice yelling and screaming. In the hallway stands someone tall, their figure shadowed and blackened, the only thing visible of them being two, red crosses where the eyes should be -- but the fear and terror that [ the point of view, the maker of the video, you ] feel is palpable, even from a silhouette. The figure grins and breathes out black smoke, acrid and suffocating -- a lot of it, until the entire screen is blackened. Pitch black. Nothing. Then, one by one, almost cartoonish mushrooms start covering the entire screen, in oddly sickeningly high definition.
The video glitches again, and snaps to what seems to be a weather report. A masked woman with glitching features cheerfully holds what looks like a spine to a map over a pulsing red marker.
"...C-c-c-c-currently, there is a forecast for heavy rains innnnnnn Hole, particularly concentrated around the Department Store! There will be some flooding expected, so so so so please be sure to stay in in in inside and don't go out, please stay inside if you know what's good for you! Sorcerers beware! The Final Days have begun ー"
...And then the video shuts off. The VHS will not replay. If you check it, you see that its film has disintegrated into black, smokey powder. ]
he watches this story idly, up until the point where it glitches, and then--
the sight of those bodies draws his attention immediately. there's no way they could have been-- hythlodaeus and azem are at home. safe. untouched by all of this. whoever this figure is, if they're the source of it-
he'll bear this in mind. the location, as well, the mention of the final days (how, though, in a place like this? not that. not yet.) when it shuts off, he just exhales and turns from it, unsettled.
The contents of the VHS will remain clear in your mind. Suddenly, your surroundings seem less vibrant. Emptier, hollower. Physically, nothing seems to have changed, but the aura of the building seems vacant out of loneliness rather than for the purpose of festivities.
You smell blood in the air, and the weather outside seems to have gotten... worse. Cloudier. Your scientist brain tells you it might begin raining, soon. ]
with that shift in aura, though... he no longer wants to remain here. and if nothing is happening--]
Inform your employer I have gone ahead to the festivities, if you please.
[he says to the man who may or may not still be lurking about. emet-selch doesn't have all day!! he may as well go figure out what's going on by observing it, rather than sitting around in this suddenly lonely place.]
[ Staff man is still here, kind of nervously on a mushroom shaped phone that he almost drops when Emet-Selch informs him he'll be leaving. He seems also kind of distracted by the possibility of incoming rain. He can catch the tail-end of a last stuttered 'yessir!' as he leaves.
Emet-Selch is free to leave the building. The streets are suddenly empty and grey. The flyers and fun banners are still up, but they only flutter quietly in the picking-up wind.
It won't be too hard for him to find out where Blue Night is happening if he wishes to head on over immediately -- it's a massive place, and weirdly enough, the skies seem to shift towards night in that direction. ]
[off he goes! with his newfound Bad Vibes and also the knowledge that apparently people here just assume he's a devil or something. love that for him.
he does wish to head over immediately, though, keeping an alert eye out along the way for any potential threats, Problems, or just. things that stand out. otherwise he is Making His Way Downtown.]
[ He'll find that the bustling city really has gone silent. The only presence he feels is the heavy atmosphere of rain, and the devil statues he passes, which really do seem to leer at him.
Fortunately...? As he nears his goal, the amount of people bustling seems to reach a comfortable amount again. It doesn't seem they are aware of the incoming change in weather. He can arrive at the Blue Night, where he can either sneak in, or go in through the front where a bouncer has just shoved over a young man for not having an invitation. ]
[he is literally just walking right past this bouncer. hi! bye! he's nine feet tall with a sword equally as big, do you want to ask him if he has an invitation? do you, sir?]
[ Help me. Actually yes apparently, he is willing, since this is a world full of sorcerers who fire off violent magic at a hair trigger temper so a super-sized sword, not the worst thing. Size? Questionable, but this man's got balls of steel.
You hear shouting behind you like 'HEY, STOP -- DO YOU HAVE AN INVITATION FROM EN?' and some kind of yelling for security. So Emet-Selch has that going for him now.
There are stalls, fun ferris wheels, a floating black cabin in the sky, a nice big ol' stage with a microphone clearly meant for performances except nobody is there... where in particular does he want to go? ]
[he huffs out a long, frustrated sigh, pausing only briefly.]
Of course I do, it is under Emet-Selch, now leave me be-!
[they can go. sort that out. while he looks for the other two. goodbye! if they were brought to this place maybe he literally does have an invitation, but he doesn't intend to linger and find out.
off he goes, keeping an eye out for dimitri and yjh; he sort of keeps to the periphery, watching the crowds for any sign of them.]
[ This will buy him like five minutes while they learn that Emet-Selch is in fact, not on the list. You are crashing the party.
The periphery has a lot of bustling people in general! You get the feeling that looking bit by bit might be a terribly exhausting effort in such a busy place, especially when looking for a specific person. He sees nothing of Dimitri's little pineapple head nor YJH's angry eyebrows in the mingling crowd. ]
