[ i would say he might have avoided opening it if he knew, but that's a lie
Anyway, he doesn't respond to Emet's update; the only answer is a choked grunt as he's nearly strangled by this sudden, giant corpse bearing down at him. He blinks wide in surprise, a split second spent staring blankly at the body and the charred patches spotting wet, red flesh, but as soon as it's near enough to touch, his reaction is immediate.
He throws an arm up to try and prevent being throttled, the silvery flash of a dagger rising to meet the corpse after, driving in towards in towards the fleshy spot below its chin. ]
the sensation of being watched has him on edge, the nausea certainly not helping, and those somewhat familiar sights are-- unsettling. especially the flowers, given what they are.
as a wave of that nausea hits, he presses the fabric mask over his face a little tighter, trying to keep breathing shallowly, but-- at least there's less of the black dust. the wind might mean fresher air, at least, and that's beginning to feel sorely needed.
if it's coming from a particular direction, he follows it.]
[ Joonghyuk may step out onto the rooftop. The door closes behind him, the metal heavy, the sound echoing across the silent night. Itās not locked shut, and he can return if he wants to, but there is also an emergency escape roof ladder hanging off the edge. Seems heāll be able to get out of here and onto the streets this way if heād like to. He can still see and hear flashes of Dimitri and Emet-Selch through the small window on the rooftop, but he gets the feeling that once he leaves this hospital building to go explore the city, he might not be able to contact them for a while...
The burnt corpse wheezes, spitting blood onto Dimitri as it tries to croak, speak something to him, but its vocal chords are burnt nigh to ash. Despite this, what it hisses manages to get through to him, an echo that roots itself like itās his own consciousness. It sounds, perhaps something like IT SHOULDāVE BEEN YOU. The dagger buries itself deep into the corpseās head, and its head snaps back unnaturally, though the eye never stops staring, boring into him. However, the jerk backward does cause the hold on his neck to loosen for a minute.
Emet-Selch can continue onwards, twisting through hallway after hallway until he finally reaches a set of double-doors, wooden, held shut with a wooden board and a couple of crates. Fortunately for him, he actually sees sunlight through the sliver ā orange, for evening, likely. And more importantly, fresh air⦠or well, comparatively fresh air, which might be the best he can ask for at the moment. The crates are a bit heavy and seem full of... something, but they seem moveable. ]
[ Ah. Well, that makes sense for the undead to say. He hears it so clearly, even if all that comes out of the comes out of the corpse's mouth is a crackling hiss, unformed words. Even if he couldn't hear it echoing in his hindmind, he'd still know what it was saying to him. He doesn't need this place to fill in the blanks. If anything, it's Joonghyuk's words that he misses altogether, on account of being a little occupied. He probably just gets the sound of a knocked over school chair in response.
He coughs out a few scratchy words as he yanks the blade free. ]
...I know. [ For what it's worth, he agrees. ] And I am sorry.
[ He clatters backwards into a desk as he scrounges for space, using it to leverage his next strike. This time, straight for that hateful eye. ]
when it seems they're full of something, he tries to sort of judge how heavy they are and maybe what might be in them... if they seem easily openable, he'll take a peek, but otherwise he just sets them aside to pry off the wooden board.]
[ Joonghyuk is unable to see anything that strictly looks like a school. As for warehouses, some of them might look kinda warehouse-y, but he gets the sense that wherever Dimitri and Emet-Selch are, theyāre currently unreachable. The streets look dead, more or less, though as he squints down, he can see that one street in particular seems to still have flickering street lamps. It looks like it might be one of these kinds of streets, as he can see short blips of lamps and stores, ish, through jutting roof pieces, but he canāt see much from his current vantage point. Beyond that street, he sees the city open up into what perhaps looks like a graveyard.
Dimitri may stab the corpse once more, blinding out the eye that judges him so heavily. It falls backward, twitching, gurgling, but the whispers of blame donāt stop. It promises to find you, it promises to remember him, and it promises him the same fate returned. We were friends. It doesnāt seem the ideal sort of dead even with the eye stab, and though it writhes for the time being, bones cracking, room getting hot, it feels like itāll keep pursuing you.
Emet-Selch can test the crates as he pushes and pulls them around. He can open them, sure. Why he couldnāt smell this beforehand is anyoneās guess ā maybe all the blood and the rot and black soot messed with his senses a little bit? But he finds a bunch of skulls in the box. Notably, there is an opening either on top or on the back of every skull, the insides mostly empty aside from some viscera. The smell of antiseptic mixed with rot hits him like a tidal wave. Gross! ]
[ Ugh... He guesses it's better to stick with them, especially if he gets the sense he can't physically reach them. He will go down the stairs then, but this time heading down to the lower floor where the sound came from. ]
Focus.
[ IS THIS THE OBJECTIVE. Joonghyuk is really doing fine here, for now. ]
[ He doesn't know this person, he thinks. But he'd believe they were friends; what it says all feels true, spoken so directly to him that it raises the hairs on his neck. Part of him wants to take this body with him, to find a proper resting place, at least.
He nearly reaches for the corpse's hand, regardless of its rotting flesh, but tears his eyes away for now; at least he's got practice at ignoring these things. ]
...Joonghyuk? Emet-Selch? Are you still with me? I was attacked—be on your guard.
[ While the corpse is 'dead,' is there somewhere he can escape to? Is that noise around to follow? ]
[ YJH is doing fine, mentally speaking. Objective-wise, heās finding his way. He can go downstairs sure. However, he may find himself feeling a little bit lightheaded when he returns back inside. The first floor, labeled with a chipping and fading ā1Fā appropriately in the stairwell, seems to be barred shut. No amount of banging or pushing the door, prying the boards will seem to allow him through there. However, he can proceed down to āB1Fā, where he can feel⦠heat! Itās very warm in front of the B1F doors, and he can see flickers of orange through the reflections. There seems to be an incinerator down there? And also the sound of low groaning.
Dimitri can escape back into the hallway, but heāll find that everything has twisted. Papers line the walls, pasted thick with blood, the atmosphere heavier than he recalls. More advertisements for the Blue Night, red text reading āTHE DEVILS ARE HEREā. Knife gouges line the walls in cross-cross form, and he feels like the entire hallway is twisting, turning, spiraling. At the end of the hallway, he sees double doors ā an exit. And he sees pleasantly flashing lights, the sound of festival music beyond.
Emet-Selch does away with the skulls. Probably the wise choice. He can slowly open the door, sure, and he sees⦠the streets of a rural town, it looks like. The āstreetā is barely paved, more like a flattened sandy dirt road, small patches of grass, a house or shack visible but they seem barren, cheap, uneventful. No lights on inside. He does not see, nor does he feel any presence of people. Leaving the place, he feels he may lose contact with Dimitri and Joonghyuk for a while. ]
[ It's fine. He can speedrun and open the door to the incinerator room, sword still in his hand. He looks to the the direction of the groaning. Can he make out anything with the flames here? An outline?
[ Upon receiving Emet's message, he can't help a small shiver. ]
I... do not know that anyone here is alive.
[ He takes a glance to the blood and now-twisting windows, though he's mostly greeted with his own reflection, his head apparently lopped off above his shoulders.
It's all the more motivation for him to hurry along, going down the hallway towards the exit. He'll cautiously push the doors open as long as nothing's obstructing him. ]
[he pauses at the door, though, looking ahead before glancing back to the windows.]
I've located an exit, however. Should we lose contact, try to make your way outside, and I shall attempt to rendezvous with you elsewhere.
[with that said, off he goes to investigate this town! there are no lights, but is there any other sign of life here? anything seemingly out of place?]
[ The incinerator door opens without much fanfare nor resistance, though he will be hit with a blast of hot air right to the face and everything when he does so. It is hellishly hot in here. As for the sound, you tell me if itās friend-shaped, because itās a garbage bag. I canāt / donāt even need to meme this because youāre canon familiar now, it is coming from a garbage bag. Things just happen in this series.
It is tucked away in a corner as unceremoniously as normal garbage would be, amidst a pile of other garbage bags, except this one is moving, squirming, as if full of worms. The incinerator flames are behind you, the orange and white gleaming off of black, sticky surface. Whatever the noise is coming from, it seems very pained. WHOāS THEREā¦? it speaks, like a dying gasp, desperate.
Dimitri can push open the doors ā and outside, he sees... some kind of festival, accompanied by an announcing voice line (same as the screenshot). The lights twinkle pleasantly, and he can hear sounds of chatter, though nothing they say is clear. He can certainly go out and explore further, but like with Emet, he will have a feeling he can't rely on there being funny communication reflective windows.
[ Me, sweating? But also Joonghyuk is being forced to sweat. He walks over to the garbage bag, not cutting it open or opening it at all. He picks⦠It up I guess?
Or tries to pick it up with a hand, weighing how much flesh is probably in here. He knows Emet went outside or should he out of contact⦠Dimitri might still be here in spirit, but it doesnāt stop him from choosing threats first. ]
Answer my questions or youāll suffer a more painful death than you are now.
[ Dimitri is here and slightly distracted from the crazy Blue Night Carnival right ahead of him because Joonghyuk is casually choosing violence.
...It probably deserves it? ]
There is some sort of festival outside.
[ Joonghyuk seems to have the situation under control, so he'll follow The Plan and go out towards the sparkling lights. One last, concerned message: ]
Mind yourself, Joonghyuk—I will endeavor to meet with you both quickly.
[ Apparently Joonghyuk will be fine, Dimitri, because he found a new... thing? To do? Which is to ratshake a garbage bag that might have some amount of flesh in it. It rattles around and whatever's in it like. Screams. In a mixture of pain but also, huge annoyance. FUCK YOU, YOU SHITTY SORCERER! JUST KILL ME! IT ALREADY HURTS ENOUGH, NOTHING YOU THREATEN COULD BE WORSE...!. Inb4 this is a challenge to him.
[ Joonghyuk hears the sound of whatever's in the bag attempting to spit spitefully. For obvious reasons, it doesn't work, but it seems to be the thought that counts, because he hears more mutterings that sound more or less like SHITTY SORCERER, I AIN'T GONNA TELL YOU NUTHIN'.... Lovely.
Meanwhile, the heat weighs heavy, dizzying, nauseating. It doesn't help when this incinerator is starting to smell like burned flesh. Going outside does seem like a good idea.
He can turn back, go up the stairs, and suddenly find the 1F door unbarred. Speedruns you but it pretty much opens up into a hallway, to which he can turn and find the exit leading out. ]
