[Help I can't tell if the geese are making noises at Aquila or if Aquila is making noises at the geese.

Anyway look at all these goats and pigs and cows and chickens! Such a lively barn. Rin looks absolutely amazed as he looks around at all the animals.
]

We could get tons of milk and eggs and bacon here!

[No not the bacon]

[Honestly they're valid, stepping in barn muck is awful.]

You don't need to kill chickens to get their eggs! Besides, I'd just cook it all here anyway. If we cook it and eat it here then it's fine.

There is, but-

[Rin won't finish his sentence because it's time for shower of stardust! Aquila gets to see a Rin-memory!]

---

It had been built about half a year before, on the grounds that it would build character for the students, but every one of the eight hens was horribly vicious, and the chicken coop fell into disrepair because everyone hated cleaning it. The stress of the dirty environment only made the hens more violent, and everyone stopped even coming near the coop…the whole project had ended up trapped in a vicious cycle.

Any students who came to clean the chicken coop on weekends or vacation days were allowed to take the fresh eggs home with them, but no one had ever showed any interest.

A kid had been injured just a week ago.

You gulp and move closer to the wire mesh. The chickens inside explode into threat displays. They flap their wings loudly, and one of them sticks her sharp beak through a gap in the wire and tried to peck at your leg.

“Wah!”

You jump back, startled. You hug the bag you brought with you tightly, so has not to drop it.

“Yikes…”

White feathers dance around you, mixing with the snow. Behind that, the chickens are glaring at you with an evil glint in their eyes, wondering just who this intruder is. You desperately resist the urge to shuffle back farther under the pressure.

You have to get eggs from here. There was no other way. You bite your lip.

“That’s right…I’m not scared of any dumb chickens!” You try his best to pump yourself up, as much as a five-year-old can.

And then, taking the bamboo broom they use to clean the henhouse and gripping it tightly, you jump into the cage shouting.

Soon after, the hens’ flapping and unnaturally tough-sounding squawking were joined by a sky-rending scream echoing out from the henhouse…

“Gyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!”

About an hour later you make it back to the monastery with two fresh eggs. It is already evening.

Your stomach growls.

“Okay, time to make it!”

You sneak into the kitchen and boldly rolled up your sleeves, then take the kitchen apron from the chair where it is hanging. You wrap the string around his waist like you've seen the grownups do. It's an adult-sized apron, long enough that the hem drags on the floor when you wear it, but you instantly feel more grown-up.

“Woah, cool!”

Once you are done praising yourself, you follow the steps you remembered Dad doing. You get a big pot and a bowl, then take some leftover rice, miso, and dashi stock out of the fridge.

First you carefully crack an egg—one of those precious eggs that you had endured scratches all over your body and lost some hair to get. You crack it on the rim of the bowl instead of on a flat surface, so some of the eggshell falls in, but you manage to keep the yolk intact.

And what’s more…

“Two yolks…” Your eyes widen like saucers at the two yolks plopped down next to each other in the bowl.

A grin spreads across your scratched-up face.

“It’s me and Yukio!”

Then you crack the other egg. There is just one yolk this time, big and round and dark orange. Looking at the three yolks, You grin and giggle.

“This one’s big, so it’s Dad.”

Twins and a dad, a family of three. All together, just like your own family!

[He's crossing his arms in front of him.]

Those birds were nightmares with wings. Most birds are okay.
