With what's at stake and all... and especially knowing that if you kill someone outside of one of the movies at the end of the week, your hostage is safe... [they shake their head.] ...I suppose I expected more blood.

Our contracts specifically state there's an end to this that doesn't require bloodshed, precisely. I wonder if a lot of us are holding out the hope we can achieve that end rather than one that robs someone of their own hostage in the process.

We're all in the same boat. I could kill to save Luca -- I would kill to keep people under my protection safe. But then who I am taking from someone else?

I understand that thinking. Really, I do. [they hesitate.] But... that's risky, Yuri.

[their ears droop.]

In more ways than one. If you just wait it out, and someone goes after you, and you die... that's it. You're gone, and unless you've already killed someone, so is your hostage. And it's not... if I were in that position... [they look down at their hands.] I don't know. I would struggle with it, if I lived at someone else's expense, if I was fated to die. But - are any of them fated to die? Because of the situation, it feels... it feels different.

But that's the other thing, too. I really hope you aren't talking about it to other people like that - "We can just wait it out, and everything will be fine". It's true that there's a time limit to your stay here, but the contract outlines the sort of entertainment the Nightman likes, and what constitutes a breach of contract. Making conscious efforts to make things less entertaining for him... it's a grey area, but it would probably count as a breach, if too many people started doing it like that.

[in other words, if too many people go against what was initially presented to them and aren't playing for their hostage, things are going to get out of hand!]

I’m aware. Right now that’s my speculation of what’s happening — people might be hesitant to kill, knowing both hostages are on the line. Whether that will stop people once the weeks go on, I don’t know. It may not.

Based off other games, maybe there is a way to get the dead and their hostages back. But I can understand why people wouldn’t immediately leap to assuming that and start going in, knives whirling.

[ he waves a hand. ]

I haven’t said anything to anyone about what they should do or not. That’s up to them. The entertainment aspect has been drilled into us plenty at this point, and I have no intention of making an active effort to see what happens when the big man in charge doesn’t get what he wants.

It might. It might not - it's just, you said it, out loud, and the boss is nearly always watching. So... be careful. For your sake, and - for his, too.

[their ears are flat. their tail swishes unhappily. they seem to be pondering what to say next - and then they drain their entire glass of their drink and fix themselves another.]

...he isn't really a fan of happy endings. You saw what he finds most entertaining. A place like this, that he set up? I wouldn't count on anything like that being built into it, no matter what happened in other places. That was the part he liked least about watching those.

[they sound unhappy.]

I'm in the same situation whether I speak it out loud or not. I might as well be honest that I think he should take up knitting as an alternative hobby to kidnap and psychological torment or something, but he'd probably figure out my sentiments from watching me anyway.

We'll see. We don't always get what we want, but that goes multiple ways. An unpredictable ending could be quite exciting.

It's a little different. He's watching. If you say it out loud, that gives him grounds to claim you're trying to breach your contract, because there's proof you said it. If he doesn't hear you say it, there's feasibly some kind of other explanation.

On second thought, I'm not getting a hangover like I had on Thursday again. Are they hiding snacks back here?

I can hold my liquor well enough, but I don't like having a hangover.

There are ways to avoid hangovers even if you drink a lot, you know.

And yet I still had one on Thursday. Even with lining the stomach and drinking water.
