he can't see her face, which is good. she can't see his, which is better. the quiet stretches. a minute, two, three of letting lup compose herself (and maybe, composing himself, too) and then, his voice, soft if a little rougher, murmured into her hair. ] ... I love you, you know.
[she takes her couple of minutes. it doesn't feel like enough, but it has to do, for now. she can't do this around other people. they need her, so she can be like this for just... just a little while. and then she has to straighten, and she has to lift her head, and she has to keep going. this is her responsibility.
she doesn't know what to say to that, though. when he tells her. his hand in her hair, the familiar sound of his bracelet, the way his grip feels so familiar. the words came so easy. like he means it.
he has to, but the thing is - he can't, she thinks. he's already suffering enough, here. he doesn't need her suffering, too. he doesn't need all the burdens that come with it, not when he can't even show her his face.
... she's weak, though. even though she wants to answer you shouldn't, she just exhales, voice wet and cracking:]

there's like a brief moment of tension after he says it, because - well. it's hard. as fully covered as he is, it feels like he's stripped naked and run down the entire hotel, putting his whole entire life on display for the world to see.
lup saying it back makes it feel like there's a lump in his throat, when he hears how miserable her voice sounds - his grip tightens, a little, and lup can feel him breathe out, a little jittery, but no less sincere. maybe that makes it even more sincere.

his voice shifts, and she feels a little empty, for a second. okay. that's the cue, that's the tell that she has to go back to pretending she doesn't know who he is. it makes her feel ill. this whole place does. she shakes her head to clear it, and takes a deep breath.]

[ he reaches up, absently, pulls his fingers through the orange at the ends. coming close makes the chill from his hands as obvious as ever. chill of death, right... ] It suits you.

Lup, how did... [ aquila has questions, actually, but - he pauses, opening his mouth, and then closes it. ] Probably not important. [ you know. maybe he doesn't want to know. ]
[ he just groans and drops his face into her shoulder again.
a little petulantly, but there's no actual heat to it: ] 'm always, to my very soul, a bird.
[ a dumb little iron crow who likes fetching shiny trinkets for the people it cares about, or, apparently, a big raven that does the same. ] A bird taking a vow of chastity, or - y'know. Whatever it is. Vow of - championing. Whatever.
he mutters something into her shoulder that sounds like a swear word and the word monk to someone with very sharp elf ears and then lifts his head again and sighs. glad lup just spoils aquila on instinct. that gravelly tone continues as he waves a gloved hand. ]

[ it is affection week, so - his other hand comes up, briefly, and thumbs under her eye. very clearly, and obviously, he hates this, hates how tired she looks, hates that she's had things to cry over here. lup's right. it was scary. every week is scary. every day that goes by gets scarier, and being powerless and unable to do anything about it is maybe the worst part. ]
