[ they look at the remnants of the sandwich they were failing at making.... and shake their head, setting those ingredients aside.
they try for something else. simpler, maybe, something familiar - they pull out an apple and a cutting board, then summon a knife from their sleeve hammer space. their back stays to lup as they do this, but she can hear the rhythmic sound of a knife on a cutting board, after a moment or two. their tone stays calm and soft. ]
You and your brother cooked together a lot, right? Did you guys ever - iunno, fuck something up spectacularly? Comically, maybe, 's a better word.
she sips her tea, not really paying attention to what they're doing. her brain is melting out her ears.]
Oh, sure, all the time. We had to learn somehow. Uh - one time we forgot a pie in the oven at our aunt's, and it exploded. Literally. I'm still not sure how that happened.
at that, they snicker and start laughing - this time, she can see aquila's shoulders are shaking with the motion, like they're trying to keep it back a little. ]
[ the pause and unsteadiness don't go unnoticed, but, in the tone of someone who might just be full of it, someone who might be privately amused at a little inside joke, very lofty; ]
You and I have that in common.
[ Okay Sure Aquila
anyway. they seem to have finished their task! they come back over to lup, and they've got a plate! they're sort of hiding it behind their back, though. ] Don't laugh.
[ STOPPPGJFHKLDJH THEY'RE EMBARRASSED but they do not back down from their little plate when she starts laughing, even if their shoulders come up a bit at their ears. ]
Yes, yes, very funny. [ ... but they don't sound even a tiny bit offended, considering. ] I came in with plans to cook you something, but, I've realized maybe cooking is something that should be left to professionals.
[ there's a smile in their voice, though, as they duck their head a little. ]
Someone cooked me for me when I was having a shit day. I never forgot it. [ they lean against the counter, waving a hand so the kitchen knife disappears. maybe it's the thought that counts. ]
I definitely suck at it, you're right. So - I can't really cook for you, but if you ever want to see a couple of carved fruit flowers, that I can handle anytime. [ there's a jokey tone there, but they do mean it. ]
Thought that counts. [she agrees, softer. this is probably a very sad scene, like, pathetic-wise, because she's eating an apple and trying not to cry because she is exhausted and this is such a nice gesture.
wouldn't it be funny if she gave them the memshare of her cooking for gu yun after that one trial, like she doesn't but it would be very fuckin' funny]
they glance up to look at her for a moment, and. they definitely, absolutely, do not panic, even a little bit when they see that it looks like she's about to cry. oh god. ]
... maybe after a snack, might be a good idea to lay down for a bit.
[ definitely. they nod, then, and step up to the counter, then pick up the last apple bunny and hand it to her - and then sweep her up in their arms. lup weighs like twelve pounds so it's pretty much effortless, and their grip is secure and steady. ]
Don't wiggle too much. [ lightly, but, she might feel like it would take a lot of wiggling to shake their hold. off they go! ]
[she's startled by this, and she lets out a noise to reflect it, like she didn't just ask to be carried. she doesn't wiggle, but it does take her a second to relax.
... she's so exhausted that she might actually fall asleep with them carrying her? there's something soothing about it.]
[ ... oh, this is fine. lup may notice as she's starting to doze off, i guess, that aquila smells faintly like flowers.
they carry her all the way to her room, shadow transport in so they don't have to wake her up or dig for their key, and then go right to settle her down in her bed. there's a little bit of maneuvering that has to be done to do this without jostling her too much, so it takes a little bit, but once they settle her in, they pull the covers up over her and tuck her into bed.
tucked in, pillows fluffed and everything. spoiled. ]
she doesn't wake up, but the smell of flowers makes her reluctant to let go. she's asleep when they put her down, and she makes a discontent noise, holding onto them for a second before allowing the deposit.
when she's in bed, she curls up, hugging herself.]
[ ah, well. they're weak, maybe, so they don't immediately let go - leaning over enough that they can maintain the hold on her for a little longer than was necessary, really, but they're gentle when they do.
... before they go, they cross the room, and where she's curled up, they set down the little tiger from her cyoa, and lift a hand to tuck a lock of her hair behind her ear.
they pull back after that, though, with a soft - ] Goodnight, Lup.

[she closes her eyes.]
We never got anything from that place right. There was just something about the community there that made it possible.

they make a noise, at first, and then laugh, soft. ] Did it destroy your oven? At least it might have been a delicious explosion.
[ tap, tap, tap. at least they can do this part! a little teasing: ] Was that both of your faults? Or... ?
no subject
[a pause.] Definitely his fault. [yeah of course it was lup ok]

apple bunnies and a couple of apple roses.
they're actually like, pretty well carved but they are clearly still embarrassed as they present this plate. ]

she does, in fact laugh, but like. it's not a mean laugh, she is more... delighted, than anything.]
That's - that's very cute, you should've just done this in the first place! [she says, giggling helplessly.]

Maybe that's a good idea. [she clears her throat.] It's been a long day.
no subject
...Yeah. No kidding. [ they sound sympathetic. it's been a tiring day for them too, and - honestly, that shaky little inhale doesn't help.
... ]
I can carry you, or is that gonna be too damsel in distress? [ lightly, a little teasing. ]
