GRAVEKEEPER

Today, when Jason is in his bedroom, he will receive a message on his typewriter.

Are we interrupting? Well, whatever. Your presence is required at the moment. Hope you aren't afraid of the dark.

Immediately after he finishes reading the message, he will feel compelled to walk into the elevator, inside which a shadowy elevator attendant appears as a guide. Once Jason arrives at the destination, he will find himself standing just beyond the iron fence of the graveyard.

It feels particularly eerie on this fine Tuesday - a low wind whistles through the graveyard, rustling trees no one can see, and the moon is shining high and bright overhead.

Standing tall and proud is Orion, holding a shovel in their hands, the spade of it touching the ground. They don't seem to have much to say, simply glancing from Jason over to their companion. With them is Aquarius, seated on top of a gravestone to be just slightly taller than Orion. They, too, have a shovel in their hands, the spade resting against their shoulder.

"Thanks for coming," Aquarius says in a tone that implies they're aware it wasn't by choice.

Orion reaches into their uniform, and pulls out a sheath of papers, and speaks.

"...You've been tasked with an additional duty. Read the contract between the lines, but - keep in mind that there will be consequences if you choose to disagree."

RULES

1. The Gravekeeper is required to keep maintenance of the graves in the graveyard.
2. On Tuesday, the Gravekeeper will select one participant to remove from the hotel to ensure a proper fit to the open graves available.
2A: The Gravekeeper may occasionally have an additional selection made for them, per the discretion of hotel staff.
3. Interference can only be done through the tools of the Gravekeeper trade. The interlopers will not be aware of your interference.
4. The interlopers will be placed into boxes Thursday evening and dealt with accordingly.
5. On Friday morning, the interlopers will be released from their boxes.
6. The Gravekeeper must make their decision as to their power by Thursday evening.
7. The Gravekeeper is not to disclose that they are performing these duties. Discussing them with anyone other than authorized Hotel Staff, including the interlopers, will be considered breach of contract and will result in the death of ROY HARPER.

At any rate, it's not a bad thing to see you being proactive, either. Better for everyone that way, so, it was an astute plan. One that hinges on you being correct, and, then if you are correct, preferably not being caught.

I don’t care about being caught. I’m not saying I’d give myself up; they’ve got to work for it just like they work for the rest. But being caught doesn’t bother me as long as the rest of it goes according to plan.

I'd love to see how many pages you've got with me being bothered. [He looks like :} because he knows it'd be a lot because he bitches about everything.] You guys aren't worried this is going to interfere with everything that goes on Saturdays? It caused some wild speculations.

We don't get much of a choice in that regard, either. [ they glance over at aquarius, and then incline their head. ] There are two required ones again this week, after all.

However, perhaps they will be smarter about it, now that it's happened twice?

[He looks HIGHLY skeptical when Orion says the last part. He sucks his teeth in the kind of "well" sorta way.]

I think you vastly underestimate the level of reaching people will do when they are scared and desperate. When they're confused, too.

I didn't say it was a high possibility.

Maybe someone will be able to steer them back on track, should they get distracted.

I can try, but I'm not going to put much effort into it. I'll just look suspicious and attract more attention to myself trying to placate people questioning it.

[He glances around and then back.]

What happens if someone sniffs me out without me saying anything?

And they question you about it?

[ they tilt their head. ] Then you lie. It's in the contract, isn't it?

Planned to really, but I'm just making sure I've got it right before it happens.

[guestservices]

Good. It's never bad to be cautious.

[ their ears perk a little. ] Any thoughts on who, this week? Or are you going to wait and observe for a while?

[unrecked]

I'll probably look around, talk to some people.

[He does not know the party game is happening yet, but when he finds out, that is the only reason he shows up. Scouting.]

Do the shadows change why every time? [He sounds like he doesn't think Orion will answer this really.] Sieghart's motivations and Clementine's motivations were different, unless I heard a lie. So I'm not going to be able to really pick someone based on one criteria.

I'll just have to look at who may have the most to lose.

The shadows are unpredictable. [ they say after a moment of thoughtful pause. ] What were their motivations?

Even without considering that... that does feel like a solid strategy.

The shadows, I mean. It seemed like they went after different things in different people. Offering different deals.

I'm going to have to force you guys to give me a special magnifying glass as a deal.

[He's joking. Maybe.]

That could mean something. Or, it could be completely random.

[ the bit about the magnifying glass makes them just sigh. ]

Of course, Mr. Todd. I'm sure that's something we can do. [ if their tone is any indication it definitely is not. it does seem like they caught onto the fact that it was maybe a joke. ]
