DAWN WATCH.

DAWN WATCH
Today, when Shinobu is in her bedroom, she will receive a message on her typewriter.
Have you ever had one of those dreams where you awaken suddenly because you feel like you're falling?
Not a dream. Wake up call!
Immediately after she finishes reading the message, a trap door opens underneath Shinobu, plunging her into the darkness. When she wakes up at the bottom (?), bones miraculously not broken, she will find herself in a room.
It's a room she's never seen before, arching ceilings and starry-skied windows dotting each wall. A collection of bookcases, alchemy shelves and astronomy tools can be found here for perusal, though nothing can leave this room. A crescent moon-shaped window takes up a majority of the wall directly across from the entrance. Perched on the window seat is Gemini, a worn-out map in their hands.
"You certainly took your time, didn't you."
At a large mahogany desk in the center of the room, papers spread out in front of them, Aquila sits in a comfortable looking chair, elbows resting on the desk, chin perched in their gloved hand. You get the sense they might be smiling.
"Rise and shine. We've got work to do. Or, well... "
With a flick of their hand, Aquila opens a sheaf of papers labeled PARTICIPATION CONTRACT: ADDENDUM and turns it towards Shinobu.
"You've got a little extra work to do. Congrats on being qualified! I wouldn't recommend refusing. Now then - blue or black ink?"
RULES
1. Dawn Watch is required to report to the tower the moment they awaken on Friday morning.
2. Dawn Watch must select three locations to investigate after a murder has taken place. These selections must be made by sundown Thursday.
2A: Participant sleeping quarters are off-limits.
3. Dawn Watch may explore these three locations in any order they wish.
4. All evidence and sleepers will be preserved for observation.
5. Dawn Watch will not be able to meddle, remove or disturb any evidence they find during their rounds.
6. Dawn Watch must make their selection before leaving the tower and cannot change their mind upon beginning their rounds.
7. Dawn Watch is not to disclose that they are performing these duties. Discussing them with anyone other than authorized Hotel Staff will be considered breach of contract and will result in the death of Kanao.
WEEK 6
CHOICE
Please submit your three locations by Thursday, 5pm PST/8pm EST!]
no subject
1) labyrinth
2) penthouse
3) throws spaghetti at the wall casino
if someone does something in the courtyard again, i'll riot
RESULTS
the first stop is the labyrinth. everything appears normal at first...then, shadows fill the room, the people vanish, and when the light returns, shinobu can see that the labyrinth doesn't look quite right! what would she like to examine? ]
no subject
She is going to check the lava to see if anyone threw anything in it and then check out to see if any coffins are disturbed, if she has the time.
no subject
shinobu may see a coffin with an open lid in the labyrinth! but they can't stay very long, as the labyrinth is long and complicated, and they have so little time before the morning comes.
in the penthouse, she finds no one sleeping, and nothing out of place. and in the casino shinobu finds no one sleeping and nothing out of place.
as they hit all three locations, the sun is beginning to rise further and further. gemini and aquila will escort shinobu back to her gravesite, where they will let her down as gently as possible and rebury her so she can be unearthed by her CR later. well done, dawn watch! ]
AQUILA & GEMINI
gemini is at the window seat, map in their hands and watching out the window. but they greet shinobu with a nod. ]
no subject
Anyway, she takes a moment before she bows to the both of them. ]
I don't think I took a moment to thank you for all the hard work you do as staff.
[ ...
She repeats, more softly: ]
Thank you for all your hard work.
no subject
aquila glances up from their notes at that, and then tilts their head to the side, a little surprised? aw. ]
... It's our job to work hard; no need to thank us. [ their voice has softened a little as they say so, though, and they dip their head, politely. ] But, your words are heard and appreciated anyway, Shinobu.
no subject
[ better if they go hand-in-hand. ]
You likely can't say one way or the other, but the reason for the rule about how I can't go into any participants' rooms is because someone else already is, isn't it?
no subject
Well. I'm glad to meet your expectations. We appreciate your hard work as well.
[ as for her question - they tilt their head. ]
I can't say one or another, that's correct. But you can theorize as much as you like.
no subject
I thought so. How about this question: if someone throws their evidence into the lava in the unlabeled room to get rid of it, do you think it will be preserved enough for people to find even if they may not be able to fish it out or see it in full?
no subject
If it's relevant, they'll be able to find it, one way or another, one condition or another.
no subject
[ she claps her hands. it's her version of steepling her fingers. ]
That's one worry less even if it's only something sinking.
[ beggars can't be choosers, etc. ]
Although I can hope the room won't be used that way, shadows are terrible.
no subject
[ aquila agrees. ] Is that gonna be one of your spots, you think?
no subject
no subject
[ there's a smile in their voice, there. ] You've made good inroads so far - your theorizing is sound. Besides, even just making one hit is better than none at all. Will you repeat any from last week, or try to vary?

As Aquila said, we do not need thanks. We are simply fulfilling our duties, though your kindness...is nice.
[. . .]
How are you, Miss Kocho?
no subject
Duties do not have to go without recognition. [ her smile is wan at their question. ] I have had better weeks.
[ better months, really. ]
I am still more than ready to do my duty.
[ until her cyoa. anyway. ]
no subject
I understand. [but there's a hum of consideration.] We can only hope that things get mildly better as your term starts to come to a close.
[until the cyoa.]
But we do still have a task first. [they offer her the map.] Your thoughts so far?
no subject
I won't say it can't get worse because I don't want to invite it.
[ but it's going to happen anyway. if mikatsuru either die or are murderers, i simple don't know want to think about her mental state.
she takes the map from them and looks it over. ]
Of all the new places, the room with all the altars and coffins seems like a prime place.
[ ... ]
If the culprit put the deceased in a coffin, would it remain in the coffin to be found or would it show up on the table at trial?
no subject
It's a despicable room, though I imagine you have a point. [they pause though and consider her question carefully.]
...that would depend on the circumstances surrounding the body itself, the method by which it arrived in the coffin, and if anyone found it early I believe. There is a possibility it would remain, but equally there is a possibility it would arrive already when you do.
no subject
I'll need something to give me a little optimism at the moment. Realism will ease what pains my heart right now.
[ she tilts her head. ]
I see... I suppose we'll just have to find out if anyone tries that this week.
no subject
Then we will continue with practicality. You're thinking of that room then? Where else?
no subject
There are so many options now. The courtyard is popular but overused. I don't want to think about the solarium being tainted.
[ the penthouse..........
this is just me thinking what i'd do with my own murderhands ]
