[ yuri manages to reach jason in time. it really does look like a lovers embrace - the crowd cooes in delight, as yuri catches jason and pulls him in not to look.
sylvain and cloud are still struggling. the man with the bow tie cooes, too, completely ignoring the two in the back, the gruesome scene before him. ] Now, that's what we love to see, here on the Dating Game!
[ two shadowy attendants approach the guillotines, knives in hand.
the crowd appears to hush, silent. a drumroll begins to play.
the announcer says, in a low voice; ] Too bed for Prince and Prince not so charming. You know what they say - if you don't get ahead of the game, you might just lose it.
[ and then - makes a clear, downward gesture with his hand. the two shadowy figures rear back and scream, and then slice through the ropes that hold the blades in place. gravity takes over, there's a shunk noise, and a spray of blood that splashes the stage. the crowd gasps, and bursts into delighted applause, as the announce picks up sylvain's head and holds it up for the crowd to see, then cloud's.
he glances back to yuri and jason, and asks, exuberant, holding the heads - ] How do you feel, love birds? Did you make the right choice?
[No, no, no, no, no. It's not real. But it feels real. It feels real, and he doesn't even know if he was right quite yet! Well, Yuri mouthing those words to him give him a decent idea.
It feels like the pain in his side is shooting directly into his chest. His fingers dig into Yuri's shoulders, and his jaw is clenched. He's sorry. He's sorry? He does look. He has to look, he thinks. He has to... make sure.
The noise of the blade dropping makes him exhale sharply. The tension wound up in his arms and back are definitely anger. It's anger. He--can't look at the heads. Even after all the shit he's done, he can't look. He wants to turn his head away, but he knows this place may see his grimace, they'd be in trouble, so he turns his face into the hollow of Yuri's neck.
Through gritted teeth, in a whisper:] We've got to get out of here. Tell me you remember the hotel. [He exhales a held breath again.] ...My side is injured.
[ yuri is probably in a better position here, given he's facing away from the grisly scene behind them. he sucks in a sharp, short breath when he hears the shunk of the guillotines dropping, fingers digging in where he's trying to stop jason from looking.
...
he shifts a little to hide his expression a bit more. ]
What did you do? And yes, of course I do.
[ ... ]
... Thank you. [ the... way he's saying that. what just happened. he can put the pieces together and know that would've been him if jason had chosen otherwise. it's a hollow platitude in the face of everything, but either way. not saying it feels wrong.
he shivers slightly. ] Play along, remember? [ deep breath in, deep breath out. and then he laughs, light and airy and shifts to look at the host: ]
Well, I certainly feel like I made the right answers, don't you think?
[ he taps a finger to his lips. ] I might have been a bit too enthusastic with the tackling though. Couldn't really help myself.
[ they'd said something about a... getaway. they just need to get to that point. quite literally. ]
[ the host chuckles, and an amused murmur goes through the crowd, now that they've stopped applauding loudly over the bloodshed and carnage. he seems pleased as the lovebirds dip in all close, though there's a moment where his expression flickers, if jason is able to see it.
yuri, however, is not facing the grisly execution behind them, is he? no, he's facing outwards, and he can see, for the first time, the audience.
they're skeletons and corpses. rotting flesh falls from some of their bones. that bizarre clattering noise he heard earlier was the sounds of bones rattling together, as they clapped their hands and hooted and hollered and made noise for true love. the sight is nightmarish and ghoulish, some of them with overextended teeth or massive bone claws, but each clearly on the edge of their seat for yuri and jason's performance.
the clattering comes to a stop, though, and they all start looking at each other, murmuring.
back at the main scene, the host frowns at the two lovebirds, then plasters a plastic smile back on his face. ] Your honeymoon awaits.
So, where would you like to go? Your perfect, all expenses paid getaway, to anywhere you like. As long as you go together.
[Hm. Bad! All bad, everything bad. He can't even see the skeletons to know it's worse than bad.
All he can get out is,] Shark. Long story, [before they have to go back to acting. This feels like... the executions. What is with this damn place and the movies, the acting, the film?
Slowly, he pushes himself into a stand, hands on Yuri's face to bring Yuri up with him. Mostly because Yuri is going to have to help him up a bit until he can get balanced. One hand lowers away, the other goes around Yuri's shoulders. Cute couple! He hates this place.
Frowning, he glances from the host to Yuri. Where are they going? Lowly:] If we don't pick something quick, I'm about to start wailing on this guy. [The host. He's about to fight the fucking host.]
[ that's one of the most unsettling things he's ever seen, and he saw the UWU. he exhales slightly, and gives jason's arm a pinch in a clear please do fucking not gesture.
he really does not want to do something that would get either of them killed right now.
so, he just smacks jason's arm lightly. play along, play along... ]
Forward.
But I'm not against it. A hotel sounds good -- one with a nice name, and luxurious setting. Something celestial?
A hotel? That's it? You two just want to go back to a hotel. What's entertaining about that?
[ the room starts to feel - containing, almost. there's a pressure that becomes intense, worse and worse, a feeling of nausea that yuri and jason feel. something is wrong. wrong wrong wrong. ]
[STOP. Okay, okay. He might not fight the host. Then again, MAYBE HE WILL. Very quickly, things start going south. He tenses, but keeps a hold on Yuri. He starts actually looking around as the feeling gets heavier and heavier--
Wait? SKELETONS? Fuck. He's noticed the skeletons. Worriedly, he looks back at Yuri. Does Yuri want to keep pushing for the hotel, or does Yuri want to try to make some kind of break for it?]
Gotta say, the hotel sounds like a good place. [He gives Yuri a look. We gonna push the envelope, or we going to start acting? He glances at the host.] You said anywhere we want, right? Why? You got better ideas for a blooming couple?
[ oh boy they are so screwed, huh? that intense feeling of everything being wrong sits heavily on his shoulders. at least he's not the only one who sees the godawful skeletons just vibing in the background. ]
... An exciting setting though. As fun as it would be, we simply can't spend the entire time in the hotel itself.
[ he shifts a little to look at the host. honestly? it'd be nice to fight him too but they have knives and guillotines and he likes being alive. ]
After all, as exciting as what happens in a hotel room might be for a new couple, variety is key, no?
angrier, and angrier - the chattering, clattering noise continues.
the host looks between the two of them and then out at the audience. ]
What do you all think?
[ chattering. chattering, chattering. it sounds...angry, now. some of the skeletons rise from their seat. the host starts to look nervous, even, and then --
he smiles. ]
Shall we? Do you want to see the second round? We haven't had a lightning round in seasons.
[ the skeletons become cacophonus - so loud it drowns out our two actors, for a second. they start chanting. yelling. screaming. More, more, more, more!
the host snaps his fingers. ]
Very well.
[ and the floor drops out from underneath yuri and jason.
they fall and hit the ground - it's dirt, packed earth under here, cool and dark. they're together, at least, but shit's not great.
there's a low rumbling; a bright light drops from the ceiling, or, perhaps - the ground they used to be standing on. it flashes, once, and shows... a signboard? ]
💝💝💝 ✨THE TUNNEL OF LOVE ✨ 💝💝💝.
a heart shaped light appears on the signboard, illuminated in pink and white neon. the light casts their surroundings - it looks a plain, dark room, at first, though there appears to be a hallway to the right, like some kind of maze.
the announcer's voice carries through. ]
Today, our new couple will face the trials and tribulations of their new relationship. Marriage is full of ups and downs, isn't it? They'll have to survive. They'll have to thrive. In sickness. In health. In love. In in laws. All they have to do is survive this trial of marriage, and they'll be able to plan their fabulous getaway. Let's find out what the challenge will be....
[ there's a low rumble.
a slot machine appears on the screen. the group can faintly hear the chatter of skeletons and a drumroll. and the slot machine lines up to say
🥱🥱🥱
[ there's a shriek and a gasp from the crowd above.
the announcer's voice comes through one more time, amused. "Let's see how they handle it."
nothing happens, at first, but they might hear someone coughing, around the corner in the dim light from the scoreboard. ]
He keeps his attention all around them because he is a Bat, but he has both hands on Yuri’s shoulders. It’s clear he is probably going to do whatever stupid bullshit he can to keep Yuri out of harm’s way.
But it’s the floor that gives out, and he should have expected that. He grunts as gravity immediately yanks them away, fingers digging into Yuri to keep him from doing the wrong thing,
which is end up below him when they hit the ground. Instead, he can land on top. The bad part? hitting the ground makes him groan sharply aloud, and then Yuri landing on him sends a second wave of pain and nausea through him.] U…gh…! [HIS SIDE. Ow. Okay.
He strains to focus on what’s around them upside down, and then he struggles to lift his head. Tunnel…? He squints against the light.]
[ yeah, super screwed. sisi hasn't even injured yuri yet.
jason is a goddamn moron and yuri looks, for a brief moment, like he's going to try and push back against this protector bullshit he's trying to pull, but he is naught but a twink in this world and a 14 STR can't beat a 19.
still he scrambles back when jason makes pained noises, removing his weight from any injuries. ]
You are injured. [ he hisses, not even looking around at the tunnel or anything else just yet. stop trying to keep him from getting injured! goddamn!! ]
[ the audience is pleased by this. wow. their ship is so cute. the skeletons are cooing despite their clear and obvious bloodlust.
anyway, wow you guys are doing great. you can stand back up and get your bearings, if you'd like. the coughing sound from around the corner continues. it sounds vaguely female? ]
My side’s fucked, not my ears. I heard you the first time.
[And he doesn’t CARE, he will continue to be a (anti) hero.
Carefully, he leans to the side so he can try to ease up to his knees. He hisses, pressing a hand to his side like this will help not stretch the wound when he clambers back to his feet. His head swims.]
What the hell… is that…? [He is already walking toward it warily. He has to go first, he’s the tank!] Stay behind me but watch your back.
[ don't be a complete bitch about this jason, they want to get out of this in one piece. or. as many of their pieces as possible. ]
Seiros. You can at least lean on me.
[ literally, he's going to shove himself right up to his side. not only will the audience love it, it means if he does stumble and try to eat floor, he can help him. ]
... Someone coughing? Who on earth would be down here...?
[ yuri does not stay behind, he stays to the side. but he will be keeping an eye out on both their backs and whoever this coughing person is. ]
[He will take the leaning help because he doesn’t want to hear Yuri chew him out.
The round the board, and he stops them, surprised to find another person. They’re injured, though, so he quickly pulls away from Yuri so they both can move freely.
She seems to know him anyway.]
Friend of yours? [To her:] You alright? Need some help?
[ realistically, he knows this probably isn't real. cloud and sylvain weren't real, but it didn't minimise what had happened. and it doesn't do anything for the feeling of dread he has prickling at his senses. ]
Gee, I got put in some stupid dating game, and I guess they didn't like me very much.
[ oh, the sarcasm. hapi is full of it, as always! she looks... a mess, her hair sticking up in random places, bleeding from her temple, and clutching her side. she looks between yuri and jason, and wipes her mouth. ]
[He curses under his breath, letting go of Yuri so he can crouch down beside her.]
Let me look at you. Do you know if you can walk? Is anything broken? You were coughing. You got blood in your lungs?
[He glances back at Yuri like he might say something, but then… just turns to the girl again.
Fuck.
It feels scummy to put Yuri on the spot and make him decide whether they are taking her, or leaving her based on some kind of hunch they aren’t real.]
[ he's going to look her over carefully -- jason's said the injuries to look out for, but he's looking for anything hidden, any weird colour or tone to her lips or skin. she's bleeding, sure, but how bad is her blood loss? ]
Whether that's a good thing or not-- they threw you down here? They didn't-- [ he doesn't finish the sentence. it had been uh... very definitive, what they'd done to the other two contestants after all. ]
[ she just looks weak and miserable, actually - she's breathing kind of hard, but she manages a weak half smile for yuri, at first. ]
Something about a lightning round. It - I was up there with Coco, but I. I'm...
[ hapi lets jason look her over, and looks at him for a long moment, instead. ] I don't know. Feels like everything's broken. I'm just...
[ seeing him, seeing yuri and jason - yuri, who doesn't look too bad, and this big lug who is staring. constance, who -
... hapi closes her eyes.
she leans against the wall.
and she sighs.
this might not mean much to jason at first. but there's a very ominous sound that comes directly from behind hapi, and in the darkness, the two of them can just see a pair of large, brightly glowing yellow eyes, and hear the sound of a snarl. ]
[He hates that. And this. EVERYTHING feels broken? Hates it. He just assumes Coco is probably dead. That's like the best theory he's got in this shithole.
At first, he thinks maybe she has passed out or, worse, died. He starts to reach out, but freezes when two eyes wink on in the darkness. Everything in him tenses immediately.]
Get back. Get back!
[He's sure Yuri can handle himself; Jason's first concern is Hapi regardless of her real existence or not. He shoots his arms out and beneath her since he's already crouched, ignoring the rip of pain up and down his side. He hustles to lift her and stand at the same time so they can, like, run? At least get a head start on putting distance between something that will definitely leap out of the shadows.
Why does he offer his back to this thing? BECAUSE THERE IS A GIRL IN HIS ARMS, protect.]
It's the sigh. You've got to stop her from doing that again -- or better yet let me carry her, I'm not injured. [ HE'S INFURIATED. ] Cover her mouth, whatever you have to do it draws monsters to her.
[ hell. is there anything around he can grab to use as a makeshift weapon? any loose metal or debris? ]
the monster snarls, as it steps out of the shadows, and boy howdy it is nasty looking. the steps it takes rattle the ground, shaking dirt from the ceiling.
the crowd begins chattering and chattering and clattering, excited.
the monster roars as jason, who is a dumbass who i love with all my heart, picks up hapi. she makes a pained noise, curling up against jason's chest, breathing weakly and opening her mouth again like she's going to say something.
it takes a step forward, and then it throws its claws out to attack both yuri and jason, and then starts charging up something magical as it stampedes towards them. as for makeshift weaponry - sure, yeah, yuri can have a metal pole that must have come from the stage above. it's about three feet long. good luck bud
