ALSO WHAT THE HECK!! A man can’t fall asleep on the job in the tower for five minutes without someone drowning?!
He starts booking it across the beach, then down to the water. It was only one tag, so I remember to take the walkie off and toss it into the sand for a minute before he barrels into the ocean.
He is coming for the sexy save! Good thing he has muscles and knows how to swim.]
anyway as he just absolutely yeets the radio and throws himself into the water like a hero, jason begins to fight against the current. he's an athletic guy. he's a good swimmer, probably. but this feels - it feels like swimming through sludge. for a moment, it's not sludge.
for a moment, it's dirt that he's swimming through. static courses through his vision, and he's clawing at the ground, trying to force his way out of his own burial. out of grave dirt.
....but this isn't his burial, is it? no. he's here - he's at work. he's a lifeguard. he saves people. maybe it's not the way people do it normally - maybe he's a little bit of a renegade, a maverick, but by god, he's saving people's lives. and that's what he's supposed to do right now, isn't it?
jason's head breaks the surface of the water, and he manages to get to the person who is struggling. it's hard to tell who they are at the moment, but, is jason just gonna let them drown? ]
Also double help. This is... weird. This is a little concerning actually. A strange, displaced sense of dread spikes up in his chest. He's not sure why? He's a lifeguard, and he does this all the time. He's not sure... why it feels like he's wading through dirt, or why he feels so nervous about it.
The panic is there, sets in, and then disappears after he slows to a tread. We...ird. Oh, right! THE DROWNING PERSON. He started breast-stroking again to get out to them through the current and waves.
He isn't gonna let them drown! He grabs them down under the water to haul them up.]
[ jason's sexy, sexy breaststroke is incredible. he's drawn a crowd of people watching him, actually, ooing and aahing and watching in concern as the sexy lifeguard gets his arms around the person and hauls them up. now that he's at least up, he can see he's holding a blonde girl, her floofy hair plastered to her everywhere. she swears, grabbing onto him.
the riptide is threatening to pull them under, and the girl chokes out a wet, desperate breath, clawing her hands into his arms and nearly pulling him down, too. they're both dunked underneath a crashing wave, once. twice - but then, however, with jason's fourteen, he's able to push back against the current and manages to break free of the actual riptide.
the girl, at least, is very light. she's also conscious, at least, desperately holding onto jason with her weak arms. where to, hero? shoreline? you gonna keep swimming or tread water? ]
He is incredibly manly and hauls the girl up onto his chest so she won't struggle or sink back down. Well, both go down once or twice, but it's fine. His tids make him buoyant.
With one arm under her, he starts swimming back to the shoreline! It'd sure be something to get eaten by a shark after being saved from drowning.]
[ he is so incredibly manly, and his tids are HELLA buoyant. it's really impressive, actually. the girl has her arms around his neck, now, and she's being lifted - she coughs and hacks up water. ]
Hhahahhh. Uhh. [ her voice is familiar - when she looks at jason actually, despite looking like a drowned rat, he knows her. of course he knows her, why wouldn't he? she's got those cute, pointed ears. the freckles. his girlfriend, lup. you two have only just started dating, but you've been head over heels for her for months haven't you? royce hates her, but whatever.
lup coughs again, trying to cling onto him as he swims. ] Hhhey, babe. Sorry, to. [ she coughs, leaning against him. ] Meet you like this. Where are we?
[ the shoreline feels pretty far away. it's gonna be a long swim. ]
He starts swimming a little faster, help.] Lup? Christ's sake. [This feels IC somehow.]
We're in the middle of the damn ocean. Did you decide to go for a little swim, or something? Come on, let's get you out. Don't go in the water without a lifeguard on duty.
[ his girlfriend! he's been in love with her for months. it's really cute! they also have another boyfriend who is waiting for them back at home. that goober must not have wanted to come out for a swim today.
lup manages a smile, despite looking like absolute fucking shit, but then, looks surprised... ]
... What? The ocean? Jason. What? This...
[ lup looks around them. it sure is the ocean. her brow furrows, and through a strained cough, she asks - ] .... What the hell's going on?
lup slaps her hand against his chest. it's weak and ineffectual. ] Yeah, no - I was definitely drowning, is this, is this one of those things? [ they look from left to right. ] Those - I already went on one of these, this is bullshit.
[ they get to an area of the water where they should be able to stand, at least, and lup thwaps her hand against his chest, again. ] I'm okay, you big doofus, I'm fine, put - put me down. Are you fine?
[It's weak and does nothing, but this is IC, so he thinks nothing of it. Except for how crazy she is talking. Or... is she? It--no, she...]
One of those things...?
[One of those things she went on? WHAT? Suddenly, he isn't feeling quite so confident. In, like, anything. Like there's something he's forgetting. He kind of laughs once, awkwardly.
He puts her down, but doesn't let go of her waist because--well, because she scared the piss out of him.]
I'm fine...? Doing my job. Saving wild elven women who decided to take a mid-afternoon swim.
[ that's fine. she is a touchy creature, isn't she? lup always has been. she did like, almost die two seconds ago. she looks around, left to right, brow furrowing. ]
I - well, I guess. Kind of? You're supposed to save people, or - Jason.
[ she takes his face in her hands and squishes it gently, trying to pretend a little that her hit points weren't just zapped.
something (or someone?) is swimming up behind them, but lup hasn't noticed. ] Don't go crazy on me. We're at the hotel, remember?
[He is absolutely just standing in the shallows like a dingus, holding Lup's waist while she holds his face. Is expression is... torn? Like he thinks she's joking, pulling a prank on him.
But then he's... unsure? The... hotel? His brow shifts. He looks through her for a moment, scrabbling to remember. The ho...tel? He kind of laughs uncertainly.]
What hotel... exactly...?
[He actually does not notice anything coming up behind them because he's got his back turned.]
[ HELLO? can you picture her offended expression. she's looking at jason like he's grown a second head.
she pulls back a little to look at him, now seriously worried, brows knitting together - and then looking... scared? her ears go downwards. ] Jason. Seriously. You -
[ but that's really all she gets,
jason might hear distant music? and then out of fucking nowhere, a shark fin pokes out of the water right behind them, and it clamps its jaws into lup's leg. she screams, and the shark grabs her and tries to yank her underwater. the crowd gasps, horrified. ]
For a moment, it looks like whatever this means is going to dawn on them, and then Lup gets forcefully grabbed by the jaws of a shark and yanked away. He yells her name and immediately tries to grab her by the arms, or anything he can get a hold of.]
Shit!
[No time to blow the whistle, he's too busy seeing if he can grab his girlfriend!]
[ lup's scream is muffled by the sound of her hitting the water - there's a huge splash as the shark rips away and blood blooms on the surface. the crowd outside gasps, again, immediately, and jason dives directly into action mode as the shark tries to swim away with its prey. he's always been a strong swimmer, that's part of his job.
he realizes he has a second here, where he can grab lup and pull her up. she'll be injured, but the likelihood of him falling prey to the shark is pretty high. it gnashes its jaws into her leg and she screams, again, this time, open mouthed, twisting desperately to bash at its nose, and jason has one second to make his move. let lup get pulled down by the shark?
[Well, uh. He's a Bat. So there isn't a single bit of hesitation when he grabs her and slings her with one arm away from the shark and back toward the shore. She'll hate him for it, but it's fine.
This is about saving Lup.
There also isn't any fear or hesitation when he leaps in the opposite direction of where he tossed Lup--right at the shark. He really dives in on it like he's about to start beating the shit out of it with his fists.
Like, just in case it tries to go after her again or something. He doesn't care if it attacks him. Sometimes that happens.]
[ you're so cool, jason. lup shrieks, this time - it hurts, it hurts, and hten she realizes what's happening, woozy and losing blood, desperately reaching out like she can catch him, with a panicked - ] Jason!
[ he can hear the strain in her voice - the desperation, the panic, that she can't do anything about it, but jason's already made his choice, hasn't he?
he gets to wrestle with the shark for a moment - really, really fighting it, as it gnashes its huge teeth and takes a chomp out of his side. he's going to be feeling that tomorrow! and jason keeps fighting it. under the water, though - he can't pull free. he can't get out of the water. out of the grave? out of the water.
[All he can think about in the moment at the start is fighting this shark. The tunnel vision of survival, something feral and wild. If each boy is a piece of Bruce, then Jason is the strength, the rage. Even in the water, his fists hurt.
He tumbles under and chokes out bubbles when the shark bites into him. The adrenaline keeps him from feeling anything too bad for right this minute aside from the sear of initial pain.
He struggles, not sure if he's swiping his arm through water or dirt. He can't get out. He's really going to get bested by a shark. But the walkie is on the beach. It's fine. Lup can get help; he prays other people help her. He prays she uses the walkie to talk to get Royce.
He inhales waters; it burns and feels heavy all the way down.
jason inhales water. the shark's jaws are massive and powerful, though it flinches and recoils from its prey as he hits it, but won't let go, as the teeth sink further and further into flesh, jason's consciousness wavers. he fights back like a champion. but the fight starts to leave him. is it water, or death? is anyone coming?
the last thing he hears is lup's screams from the shore, and - distantly, distantly, the sounds of applause.
no one's coming.
jason's world goes black. perhaps, as the world has come to expect of him - he goes down swinging.
