I do worry that...On the space station I became accustomed to believing I had the capability to mitigate damage, but the rules are different now. I'm not sure what to do with myself if I don't have a goal in mind.

You've been knocked back to the starting line, so to speak, but that doesn't discount your experience.
It's a different context, and perhaps some rules are different, but many are the same.
You have to learn the people here to learn how to mitigate, as you learned the ones in your previous experience.

The people. The people are very different, I think. In some ways, less openly mercenary, but most of us have adapted to the notions of murder and execution.

There are a few notable exceptions; most is a good assessment.

So, in that regards: while other mysteries are still behind the proverbial curtain, perhaps getting to know the machinations of those you aren't familiar with is the best way to begin defining the way to do damage control, at least for now.
